Canadian RB Jerome Messam to join Riders

The Brampton Bus is stopping in Saskatchewan again: the Riders have agreed to terms with Canadian ball carrier Jerome Messam on a one-year deal, per sources.

Messam spent parts of two seasons in 2014 and 2015 where he re-established himself as an elite runner. The six-foot-three, 255-pound back rushed for 826 yards and two touchdowns while hauling in 47 passes for 464 yards, 1,290 yards from scrimmage in 15 games in 2015. At that year’s trade deadline, then-interim general manager Jeremy O’Day sent Messam to Calgary for Canuck kicker Tyler Crapigna. That off-season the Stamps re-signed him for two years.

Riders head coach and general manager Chris Jones is said to have an affinity for Messam, raving about him in defensive film sessions. Messam rushed for 305 yards in three meetings against Saskatchewan in 2017, two times going over 100 yards in both games that were both Stamps victories.

The 32-year-old was a stalwart for Calgary rushing for 2,394 yards and 20 touchdowns adding 701 yards on 93 catches and another major in 37 regular season games. Messam had a career-best campaign in 2016 when he rushed for 1,198 yards and 11 touchdowns while catching 54 balls for 485 yards and one TD, all of those numbers are single-season highs. That year he earned the CFL’s Most Oustanding Canadian award.

Over his eight-year CFL career, Messam has rushed for 5,484 yards and 34 touchdowns while adding 1,997 receiving yards and two touchdowns on 219 receptions.

  1. Love it. One of my favorite players in the CFL to watch

Good signing but interesting for sure. They certainly had a very crowded backfield already, although Messam carries the right passport so can never discount that. Have to think someone is getting their walking papers soon over this though. See you Sept 2nd!

WTF!!! He better be dirt cheap. We have more pressing needs elsewhere. Oh boy…

    • Have to agree. Like Messam but he is 32 and we have more pressing needs like a left tackle (Campbell)and some DBs!

      • Absolutely agree. Messam is a shadow of what he once was. The Riders have more urgent needs.

A shadow of what he once was? Coming off two career years where he posted over 2200 yards rushing, nearly 2900 yards from scrimmage and 21 TD’s? All while playing 35 of 36 games. Interesting theory.

International tackles and corner backs can be found in the U.S and brought in for a fraction of what the demand on the open market is right now.

    • I agree, he could be trade bait

  4. We don’t need Messam back in green and white. Should focus on bonifide DB

  5. Hey Chris. Good luck with Nic Dempski. He spends more time on IR than the field. Its allot safer there.

In the past yes; but you never know sometimes a change works well. Cory Watson always seemed to be injured in Winnipeg but I never heard of him missing any time in Edmonton; albeit I don’t really follow them that closely lol. Who know what the future holds but let’s hope for good health to all players!

Well.. I guess… Ok. So that means Trent Richardson is getting cut?

  7. Demski signed with Winnipeg, get your facts straight lol

A big signing for Saskatchewan. However, I would be interested in seeing the Saskatchewan payroll numbers as I’m not sure how they can afford him… unless they plan on dumping other players on their roster.

    • Probably the release of Derrick Dennis earlier today ($170K) was to make room fon the cap and subsidize a couple things including Mess. Don’t forget that Winnipeg picked up LeFrance today and he was getting $130K. in SK. Jerome isn’t going to get a whole bunch more than that at his age. His big $200K young Canadian all star paycheck is gone. Calgary couldn’t try and lower his pay that much. Mess had to find out on the open market.
It’s for a year. Maybe now having a solid Canadian back in their helps us big on second and 7/6/5 The Riders have another American receiver on the field and can do so many things now.

  9. I suspect that Dennis’s release dumps some cap-room. League audits will reveal violations if any exist? Great signing for the ‘Riders. Evans and Clark, as well. Welcome back to all.

  10. Don’t like it, not enough tread left on the tires. That being said I hope he proves me wrong.

  11. Good signing for Riders, Messam still has some action in him!1

Hey stinky Johnson you should know your Tbs as Marshall probably one cut ad thigpen Richardson and messam will do great

    • They also made some cap space with demski and lafrance gone, besides dennis… also leonard. Lafrance was Canadian running back, Morris is also Canadian running back not resigned yet… that’s 2 Canadian holes at running back Messam can help fill and they’ve opened up cap space in the last day by the look of it.

Some big holes on the o line. Best be making some moves

    • One big hole anyway, or perhaps one and a half if you want to count Clark. But it looks like we’ve just signed a big man to fill that big hole.

  14. Well, #InJonesWeTrust, but I’m not sure about this one. However, he may be thinking long term. Richardson is likely to go back to the NFL after this year, but Messam may have a few years left in him. Also, both Marshall and Richardson got injured last year, and Messam is great depth. There didn’t seem to be a lot of interest in him from other teams either, which means that we might have gotten him at a good price, at least for this year.

  15. Even at a reduced price, Messam is too expensive to be used as a depth player. He will be starting. There are enough over thirty players on the Riders roster, they can start their own club.

  16. He is done – don’t agree with this move Chris

  17. Colour me green // February 14, 2018 at 8:28 am //

Not sure this is the best value for the team. Does allow an import receiver. Jones knows what he is does no though so it should work out. Contracts are not guaranteed so trade or release is always an option

  18. We are gonna need an O-line at some point. Don’t think we needed Messam.

  19. All along Messam wanted to go where he has the best chance to win the Grey Cup..and he deserves that…He is going to be awesome…

Best blocking back in the league and runs terror on the opposing team. Great signing…

  21. It always surprises me when people worry about the CAP, you have no idea what they are making and where they are at……who cares…win the cup and pay the fine!!!!!!Its a luxury tax

Nothing to see here, just more of the same: Jones continues to pick up after Huf like a dog walker at the park. Saskatchewan is the place former Stamps go to collect a fat paycheque before they retire.

    • if you remember it was Huff who picked up this guy from the riders. So using your juvenile point of view, Huff picked up Rider scraps. And didnt the stamps just sign a guy who the riders cast off and were not interested in signing, Murabure I think his name is. He was deemed not good enough for the riders but I guess if the stamps like him, that fine….teeeeheeee

Typical signing players for overkill Riders already have strong TB. Riders need defense someone like Bear Woods.
