The Ottawa Redblacks are adding former Toronto Argonauts personnel man Alex Russell to their front office staff.

Russell made the announcement via Twitter on Thursday. His full statement can be read below.

“After 5 rewarding years with the Toronto Argonauts, I am excited to announce that I have accepted a role as the Assistant Director of US Scouting with the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

From winning the Grey Cup in 2022, to setting the franchise record for regular season wins in 2023, I’ve made memories and friendships in Toronto that will last a lifetime.

There are too many people to individually thank, but I want to give a special shoutout and sincere thanks to Michael “Pinball” Clemons, Vince Magri, Ryan Dinwiddie, Jim Barker, and all of the players I had the pleasure of working with.

I’m grateful for this new opportunity with the REDBLACKS and am excited for what the future holds!”

The native of Ancaster, Ont. first joined the Argos in 2019 as their coordinator of football operations. He was eventually promoted to director of football operations and national scout in 2022, helping the team win a Grey Cup. He was in charge of Toronto’s salary cap tracking, while also taking on a prominent role in contract negotiations and player evaluations.

Prior to his time in Toronto, Russell spent three years as coordinator of football operations with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He began his CFL career as a volunteer at the 2013 National Combine and later worked for the operations team at Tim Hortons Field.

A former cross-country runner at Western University, Russell graduated with a degree in business administration from the Ivey Business School. He worked as the manager of operations and social media coordinator for the men’s basketball team at his alma mater before catching on with the Ticats.

The Redblacks will begin their 2024 season when they host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday, June 13 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
