Former star CFL quarterback Chris Streveler has signed with the Miami Dolphins, per sources.
Streveler joins 2020 fifth overall NFL Draft pick, Tua Tagovailoa and Jacoby Brissett as quarterbacks currently on Miami’s roster. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has become known for creating innovative offensive schemes to set himself apart and it could be an ideal match.
The dual-threat QB was a free agent after finishing the last NFL season on the Baltimore Ravens practice roster. Streveler worked out for the Dolphins two years ago prior to inking a contract with the Arizona Cardinals, so the player personnel staff in Davie, FL was already familiar with him.
The six-foot-two, 216-pound passer was released by the Cards in November after completing 17-of-25 pass attempts for 141 yards with one touchdown and one interception in parts of two seasons with Arizona 2020 and 2021. He also rushed seven times for 21 yards as a backup behind No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick Kyler Murray.
The 27-year-old completed 65 percent of his passes for 2,698 yards in two seasons with the Blue Bombers along with 19 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,167 yards and 22 touchdowns averaging 5.7 yards per carry and was a key part of Winnipeg’s Grey Cup run in 2019.
Every single NFL franchise had a representative at Streveler’s pro day. He turned in a 4.45-second 40-yard dash, 38.5-inch vertical and 10-foot, five-inch broad jump at six-foot-two, 209 pounds. Each of the three testing results would have been top among all quarterbacks who attended the 2018 NFL Combine.
He worked out privately for the Chicago Bears but went unselected in the 2018 NFL Draft and actually turned down NFL rookie mini-camp invites to sign north of the border. The Bombers had known about Streveler for a while, putting his name on the team’s negotiation list while he was in his final year at the University of South Dakota.
Streveler was a captain and led the Coyotes to the NCAA FCS playoffs for the first time in program history as a senior. He completed 65.7 per cent of his passes for 4,134 yards with 32 touchdowns against eight interceptions while rushing for 720 yards and 11 touchdowns on 168 carries (4.3 yards per carry) during 13 games. For his efforts, Streveler was named an FCS first-team All-American at quarterback.
Streveler actually earned a Masters degree in sports management from the University of Minnesota prior to transferring from the Golden Gophers to South Dakota. And he was an FCS academic all-star team selection in Vermillion, SD while working towards a Masters in kinesiology.
Through his time in the NFL to date, Streveler has earned over $1.1 million USD.
