The Toronto Argonauts were without franchise quarterback Chad Kelly in practice on Tuesday. As per the team’s official report, he is dealing with a hand injury. The severity of the injury remains unclear.
The 32-year-old has completed 70.9 percent of his passes for 5,067 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions over 15 starts this season. He has posted a 9-6 record, helping the Argonauts clinch a home playoff game.
The six-foot-two, 216-pound passer leads the CFL in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and interceptions. He has also rushed 29 times for 183 yards and three scores.
The native of Buffalo, N.Y. has played 60 career regular-season CFL games over five seasons with the Boatmen, completing 69.0 percent of his passes for 11,938 yards, 68 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions. He has won two Grey Cups and was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player in 2023.
Toronto’s backup quarterback is Nick Arbuckle, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the 111th Grey Cup when he filled in for Kelly, and led the team to a 41-24 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.
The Toronto Argonauts (9-6) will host the B.C. Lions (8-6) on Saturday, October 3 with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m. EDT. The Lions are coming off a win over Saskatchewan that launched them to second place in the West Division, while the Argonauts extended their winning streak to four games with a victory over Winnipeg.
