Montreal Alouettes returner DeVonte Dedmon stretchered off against Lions

Montreal Alouettes return specialist DeVonte Dedmon was taken off the field in a stretcher during the fourth quarter of the team’s game against the B.C. Lions on Saturday night.

The 30-year-old suffered an undisclosed injury during a kickoff return. Josh Hagerty delivered a low hit on Dedmon, who flipped head over heels before landing on the turf. Upon replay, it appeared Hagerty may have been pushed into the returner. There was no flag on the play.

Dedmon received attention from medical staff while a stretcher was brought onto the field. He gave a thumbs up and clapped his hands as he was taken off moments later, drawing an ovation from the crowd and both teams.

The native of Williamsburg, Va. has returned 22 kickoffs for 672 yards and 19 punts for 210 yards this season, his first with the Alouettes.

The five-foot-nine, 212-pound speedster played six previous seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks, and was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2021.

Over 50 career regular-season CFL games, Dedmon has caught 25 passes for 226 yards, rushed 18 times for 88 yards, returned 150 kickoffs for 4,019 yards, 170 punts for 2,195 yards, 10 missed field goal returns for 290 yards, and scored seven touchdowns.
