Montreal Alouettes six-game Travis Theis, will start Shomari Lawrence in B.C.

The Montreal Alouettes have officially placed running back Travis Theis on the six-game injured list. Though it appears possible he’ll be taken off early, the team wants to exercise caution as they’ve already clinched a playoff berth.

“He’s being put on the six because it is a possibility it takes that long, but if he heals up faster than that, he’ll be on the roster. He’s too talented not to be,” head coach Jason Maas told the media on Tuesday.

“He’s done such a tremendous job for us. He gives us a spark, he does a lot of great things for us. The moment he’s ready to go, he’ll go, but if it happens to take that long, it’s gonna take that long. We know where we’re going to be into the playoffs, so at the end of the day, if a guy’s not quite ready, there’s no need to push him.”

Theis has rushed for 831 yards and seven touchdowns through 12 regular-season games, ranking fourth league-wide. The 25-year-old native of Pratt, Kan. has also made 28 catches for 203 yards.

Shomari Lawrence is expected to start in his place. The 24-year-old rookie has played five regular-season games this year, rushing for 152 yards and recording three receptions for seven yards.

By coincidence, Theis and Lawrence were teammates for three collegiate seasons at the University of South Dakota.

“It’s a great opportunity for Shomari,” said Maas. “He’ll be ready to play. He’s got talent, that’s why he’s here.”

The Alouettes officially brought back receiver Charleston Rambo on Tuesday.

The six-foot-one, 185-pound target made 54 receptions for 585 yards and three touchdowns in 17 regular-season games last year, and also tallied four catches for 50 yards in the Grey Cup.

The 27-year-old became a free agent in February but did not sign a contract. It appears he’s expected to fill a depth role down the stretch.

“Charleston’s name has come up throughout the year, we’ve always kept in contact. A couple weeks ago, the discussions started to heat up a little bit more,” said Maas. “He’ll be ready for us when needed.”

“We know we’re in the playoffs, and you want to have as strong a team as possible. Charleston’s a great addition for us. He’s been here, he has comfort level with our offence, with our quarterback, with the guys. He’s as hard a worker as anybody in our building.”

Maas also indicated that Canadian tight end Rohan Jones could play this week. The Montreal native officially signed with the team over the weekend after attending training camp with the Los Angeles Rams.

Jones was the eighth overall pick in the 2026 CFL Draft out of the University of Arkansas. In 2025, he caught 19 passes for 519 yards and four touchdowns over 12 games with the Razorbacks.

“We have the thought of putting him up (onto the active roster), but he’s gotta also know what he’s doing,” said Maas.

“If we feel comfortable by the end of the week that he can go out there and execute with three days of practice, then we’ll do it. If we don’t, and it feels like it takes another week, then we’ll hold him back.”

The Montreal Alouettes (10-2) will visit the B.C. Lions (6-6) at BC Place Stadium on Saturday, September 12 with kickoff scheduled for 10:00 p.m. EDT. The two teams met Percival Molson Memorial Stadium last week, where the Alouettes won 37-30.
