Former Riders receiver Dohnte Meyers impresses Ja’Marr Chase at Cincinnati Bengals training camp

Two-time NFL All-Pro receiver Ja’Maar Chase has been impressed by former Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver Donhte Meyers at Cincinnati Bengals training camp.

“Donhte’s been making plays with the ones. He gets in with the ones three, four plays out of the whole day with the ones. He makes plays with the ones — that’s a big step,” Chase told Kay Adams on her Up & Adams show.

“There’s a lot to like about Dohnte. He’s diligent, he cares, he’s got real juice, he can separate, and he catches the ball well,” offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher told Bengals radio play-by-play man Dan Hoard. “He’s got to stack days and then, when he gets a chance, make the plays. For the most part, he’s done that.”

The 26-year-old Meyers has been catching passes from franchise quarterback Joe Burrow and veteran passer Joe Flacco.

He worked out for five NFL teams during offseason prior to inking his first NFL contract: the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, Bengals, and Miami Dolphins.

The reigning West Division all-star started to catch attention from head coach Zac Taylor, a former Winnipeg Blue Bombers backup quarterback, and Cincinnati’s coaching staff during organized team activities.

“We noticed him in the spring, certainly. Then you go back and pay attention to his past in Canada and in college. He’s had a lot of production in his lifetime. He’s shown up. We’re not going out of our way to showcase him, he’s finding ways to show up and make some plays, whether as a receiver or returner,” Taylor said.

“The preseason games will really serve guys well where they get a chance to showcase. Does the ball find them? Quarterbacks are going to throw the ball in the preseason to guys they think can win and help them. Sometimes you find out a lot about receivers that aren’t your starting guys in the preseason games — how many looks they get from the quarterbacks, how can they create separation, and have a knack for making plays.”

The Bengals are scheduled to host the Detroit Lions for their first preseason game on Thursday, August 13 at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Cincinnati will then play the Chicago Bears at home on Saturday, August 22 and finish its exhibition schedule on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday, August 28.

Meyers’ performance in the preseason will go a long way towards determining whether or not he’ll stick with the Bengals come the start of the regular-season.
