Toronto Argonauts release DB Mason Pierce, one other

The Toronto Argonauts have released defensive back Mason Pierce.

The 25-year-old played 17 games for the Argos over the last two seasons. He made 32 tackles, three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, one sack, forced one fumble and one special teams tackle in 2023. Through eight games in 2024, Pierce recorded 29 tackles and one sack.

The Bulverde, Texas native played four seasons at the Colorado School of Mines from 2018-2022. He played 49 games for the Orediggers while making 180 tackles, 53 passes defenced plus six interceptions and returned 40 punts for 638 yards.

The five-foot-ten, 185-pound cover man was named first-team All-Conference and Associated Press second-team All-American in 2022 after posting 56 tackles and five interceptions.

The Double Blue also released Leonard Johnson. The 26-year-old played in four games while making 24 tackles this season.

The six-foot, 194-pound Johnson played 47 games over five seasons at cornerback for Duke University, recording 165 tackles, 24 pass breakups, 10 tackles for loss, six interceptions, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two sacks.

The Hayden, Alabama native went unselected in the 2022 NFL Draft after tearing his ACL in training but eventually signed with the New York Giants ahead of the 2023 season, though he was released prior to training camp.
