Montreal Alouettes defender Arthur Hamlin retires from CFL at age 26

Canadian defensive back Arthur Hamlin has retired from the Canadian Football League at the age of 26, the Montreal Alouettes announced on Wednesday.

The five-foot-eleven, 190-pound defender played eight regular-season games this year, recording two defensive tackles and six special teams tackles. He made one start at strong-side linebacker.

“I’d like to thank Arthur for his years with us. Not only has he been a great person off the field, but he has also been a very talented player,” said Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia in a statement. “For him, this is the beginning of a new chapter, and we wish him all the best.”

Hamlin was a third-round pick in the 2024 CFL Draft. In total, he played 36 regular-season games with the Alouettes and made 24 defensive tackles, 17 special teams tackles, one interception, one fumble recovery, and one touchdown.

The native of Ottawa, Ont. played collegiately at Colgate University in Hamilton Village, N.Y., during which time he was diagnosed with cancer. In 2024, he spoke to 3DownNation about his recovery and eventual return to football.

Hamlin was the latest of several family members to play in the CFL, following grandfather Howard of the Toronto Balmy Beach Beachers, uncle Howard Jr. of the Ottawa Rough Riders, father Geof of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and brother Nate of the Ottawa Redblacks, B.C. Lions, and Edmonton Elks.

The Montreal Alouettes (10-2) will visit the B.C. Lions (6-6) at BC Place Stadium on Saturday, September 12 with kickoff scheduled for 10:00 p.m. EDT. The two teams met Percival Molson Memorial Stadium last week, where the Alouettes won 37-30.
