Canadian defender Deane Leonard agrees to contract extension with Los Angeles Chargers

Canadian defensive back Deane Leonard has agreed to terms on a one-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Chargers worth $2 million, according to NFL reporter Tom Pelissero.

The 26-year-old played eight regular-season games with the Chargers in 2025, making five tackles. He was originally selected by Los Angeles in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss.

Leonard has dressed for 46 regular-season games over four NFL seasons and made three starts, recording 46 total tackles, two tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and six pass breakups. He’s also seen action in three playoff contests, adding three tackles, a pass breakup, and one interception.

The native of Calgary, Alta. was a two-time All-Canadian at cornerback at the University of Calgary, producing 47 total tackles, six interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one punt return touchdown over three seasons with the Dinos.

The son of former Stampeders defensive back Kenton Leonard transferred to Ole Miss to finish his collegiate career and made 64 tackles, one tackle for loss, one fumble recovery, and 11 pass breakups in 19 games with the Rebels.

Leonard was slated to become a free agent on Wednesday, March 11. He has earned more than $4.5 million to date in his NFL career.
