Saskatchewan Roughriders sign two, release two

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed American defensive backs Jy Gilmore and Lemondre Joe, the team announced on Tuesday.

Gilmore finished his collegiate career at Georgia Tech in 2025, where he recorded 35 total tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, and three pass knockdowns over nine games. He also served as a team captain.

The five-foot-nine, 190-pound defender spent the 2024 season at Georgia State, where he tallied 53 defensive tackles, two tackles for loss, two interceptions, and three pass deflections over 12 games.

The native of Citra, Fla. previously played at Tennessee Tech, where he recorded 115 total tackles, six tackles for loss, one sack, three interceptions, one forced fumble, and 18 pass deflections over 30 games.

Joe finished his collegiate career at Colorado State in 2025, where he made 56 total tackles, five tackles for loss, four sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and 13 pass deflections over 12 games. He was invited to rookie minicamp with the Philadelphia Eagles after going unselected in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The five-foot-ten, 180-pound defender previously played at Missouri State, where he made 90 total tackles, three tackles for loss, seven interceptions, and 23 pass deflections over 35 games.

In corresponding moves, the Roughriders have released American quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger and American running back Star Thomas from the practice roster.

Marburger joined the team late last month. He didn’t see any regular-season action.

The six-foot-two, 215-pound passer finished his collegiate career at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2025, where he led the Vaqueros to a 9-3 record in their first season as a Division I program.

The native of Mission, Texas completed 65.2 percent of his passes for 2,780 yards, 31 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, while adding 308 rushing yards and four rushing majors. He was named the Southland Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, and first-team All-Conference.

Marburger spent the previous four seasons at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he played sparingly in a backup role. He appeared in 18 games with the Roadrunners, connecting on 54.2 percent of his passes for 777 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions.

Thomas played one regular-season game with Saskatchewan, rushing nine times for 36 yards, and catching three passes for 25 yards against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The 24-year-old finished his collegiate career at the University of Tennessee in 2025, when he rushed 104 times for 596 yards with seven touchdowns, and caught 11 passes for 116 yards and two scores.

The Louisiana native transferred to Tennessee after a standout 2024 season at Duke University. In 12 games with the Blue Devils, he carried the ball 213 times for 871 yards with seven touchdowns. He also caught 20 passes for 153 yards and one score.

Thomas spent the previous two seasons at New Mexico State University, where he rushed 219 times for 1,171 yards and nine touchdowns in 28 games with the Aggies. He also made 34 catches for 351 yards and five touchdowns.

Thomas started his collegiate career at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. In 14 career games with the Red Ravens, he rushed 160 times for 970 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-7) will visit the Montreal Alouettes (12-3) on Monday, October 12 with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EDT. The Roughriders are coming off an upset loss to the Calgary Stampeders, while the Alouettes crushed the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
