The Canadian Football League has honoured Ron Foxcroft with the Hugh Campbell Distinguished Leadership Award.
A decorated basketball referee, Foxcroft invented the pealess whistle and continues to serve as CEO of Fox 40, the company that produces it. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 2019 for his contributions to sport and business.
For over 30 years, Foxcroft has hosted a luncheon honouring Grey Cup officials, presenting each member with a ceremonial ring for reaching the pinnacle of their profession.
“Too often, good officiating goes unnoticed and underappreciated – but not by Ron,” CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston said in a statement. “His efforts to recognize CFL officials is unmatched and we deeply appreciate all he does to uplift them as they prepare for their biggest moments on our game’s biggest stage.”
Additionally, Foxcroft served as the co-chair of the 84th Grey Cup in Hamilton, Ont. He has worked closely with CFL executives, personnel and commissioners over the years, offering his business acumen and insights to help grow the game.
“When I learned that I was the recipient of this tremendous award, I was both humbled and deeply honoured,” Foxcroft wrote. “Seeing the remarkable list of past recipients made that feeling even stronger. I am truly grateful for this recognition and very proud to be added to the esteemed list of recipients.”
Named in honour of the 10-time Grey Cup champion player, coach, general manager and team executives, the Hugh Campbell Distinguished Leadership Award has been given out since 2006 to someone who has demonstrated great leadership and made significant contributions to the CFL. Past winners include Wally Buono, Norman Kwong, Bob Ackles, and John Hufnagel.
This year’s award will be handed out at the first annual CFL Coach of the Year Celebration on March 25 in Edmonton. Also honoured that night will be the Coach of the Year recipient and the inaugural winner of the Ted Goveia Football Operations Award.
