Saskatchewan Roughriders sign former CFL interception leader Trumaine Washington

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed former CFL interception leader Trumaine Washington, per sources.

The American defensive back most recently played with the Orlando Guardians of the XFL, registering nine tackles in five games. He was released by the team on July 20, allowing him to make a return to the CFL.

The 28-year-old started 12 games last season for Calgary while playing primarily at boundary halfback, recording 42 defensive tackles, two interceptions and one touchdown. The University of Louisville product began the year with Ottawa but was released by the Redblacks in training camp, despite leading the CFL in interceptions with five in 2021.

The five-foot-nine, 190-pound cover man has dressed for 51 career CFL games with the Toronto Argonauts, Edmonton Elks, and Stampeders, recording 153 defensive tackles, one special teams tackle, 12 interceptions, two forced fumbles and one touchdown.

The Riders (3-2) are scheduled to visit the B.C. Lions (4-1) on Saturday, July 22, before travelling to the east coast to take on the undefeated Toronto Argonauts in Halifax, NS for the 2023 Touchdown Atlantic game on Saturday, July 29.
