The B.C. Lions have signed kicker Segio Castillo.
ʺSergio is a veteran kicker who brings significant experience and skill to an important position on our team,” Lions general manager Ed Hervey said in a statement. “We look forward to seeing how all of our kickers perform during the next couple weeks of camp.ʺ
Castillo played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2017 but tore his ACL that October in a 30-13 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, going down as he covered a missed field goal.
Castillo won the kicking job in Ticat training camp during the spring of 2017 after bouncing around the fringes of the CFL for three seasons. He made the most of it, hitting on 29-of-34 field goals (85.3 per cent) and going five-for-five from beyond the 50 yard line. The Ticats released Castillo in February 2018.
Ottawa brought Castillo in but he never kicked in a regular season game for the Redblacks.
The 28-year-old has made 39-of-47 field goal attempts (83 per cent conversion rate) while going 25-for-27 on converts and punting 114 times for a 45 yard average in 20 career CFL games.
