Canadian linebacker Alex Singleton to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles

Canadian linebacker Alex Singleton is set to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles, per NFL sources.

The Calgary Stampeders released Singleton in order to allow the deal to be finalized.

Singleton worked out for the Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Chargers and Eagles in December.

The reigning CFL tackle leader has been on NFL radars for a long time.

The 2015 NFL Draft came and went without Singleton hearing his name called, although he signed a contract with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent, but released when the team whittled the roster down to the final 53 players. The New England Patriots signed Singleton that day, but let him go on Sept. 15. After that, the Minnesota Vikings brought Singleton in for the end of the season and waived him in April.

During the time between New England and Minnesota, Singleton filed for his Canadian citizenship as his mother was born in Toronto. The Calgary Stampeders selected Singleton in the first round, sixth overall of the 2016 CFL draft. He took over the starting middle linebacker job as a CFL rookie and been among the elite defenders in the league since.

Singleton made 123 tackles, four sacks, one interception and forced one fumble in 2017 when he won the most outstanding defensive player award. That was followed by a 123-tackle season in 2018 as Singleton was named a CFL all-star for the second straight year.
