Saskatchewan Roughriders sign former Tennessee Volunteers RB Star Thomas

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed American running back Star Thomas, the team announced on Wednesday.

The six-foot, 210-pound ball-carrier played his final collegiate season at University of Tennessee in 2025. In 13 games, he rushed 104 times for 596 yards with seven touchdowns, and caught 11 passes for 116 yards and two scores. His 5.7 yards per carry ranked fifth-best in the Southeastern Conference.

After his senior season, Thomas was selected to play in the Senior Bowl, an annual showcase week and game for graduating professional prospects.

The Louisiana native transferred to Tennessee after a standout 2024 season at Duke University. In 12 games with the Blue Devils, he carried the ball 213 times for 871 yards with seven touchdowns. He also caught 20 passes for 153 yards and one score.

Thomas spent the previous two seasons at New Mexico State University, where he rushed 219 times for 1,171 yards and nine touchdowns in 28 games with the Aggies. He also made 34 catches for 351 yards and five touchdowns.

Thomas started his collegiate career at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. In 14 career games with the Red Ravens, he rushed 160 times for 970 yards and 11 touchdowns. His best game at Coffeyville was a 20-carry, 227-yard game against Butler Community College on October 2, 2021.

Veteran running back A.J. Ouellette suffered a lower body injury during Saskatchewan’s Week 3 double overtime win over the Calgary Stampeders.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-0) will host the Toronto Argonauts (1-1) at Mosaic Stadium on Friday, June 26 with kickoff scheduled for 9:00 p.m. EDT. The Argonauts are coming off a 44-24 win over the Ottawa Redblacks, while the Roughriders beat the Calgary Stampeders in overtime.

The weather forecast in Regina calls for a high of 25 degrees and sun. The game will be broadcast on TSN in Canada, CBS Sports Network in the United States, and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune in on TSN 1050 in Toronto or 620 CKRM in Regina.
