Calgary Stampeders add two quarterbacks to negotiation list

The Calgary Stampeders have added American quarterbacks Owen McCown and Conner Weigman to their exclusive negotiation list.

McCown is in his final collegiate season at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He completed 22-of-27 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns in the Roadrunners’ season opener.

The six-foot-one, 190-pound pivot originally committed to the University of Colorado in 2022, but transferred to UTSA the following year and took over the starting job beginning in 2024. In 38 career games, McCown has completed 65.3 percent of his passes for 7,736 yards, 64 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions, while rushing for 458 yards and six majors.

The native of Rusk, Tex., is the son of longtime NFL journeyman quarterback Josh McCown, who threw for 17,731 yards, 98 touchdowns, and 82 interceptions while spending time with 12 franchises across 18 seasons. He is currently the offensive passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings. Owen’s uncle, Luke McCown, also played quarterback in the NFL for 14 seasons.

Weigman is in his final collegiate season at the University of Houston. He completed 20-of-30 passes for 305 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, while rushing for 30 yards and a major in the Cougars’ season opener.

The six-foot-three, 210-pound pivot transferred to Houston in 2025 and started all 13 games. He spent the three previous seasons at Texas A&M University, starting 13 of the 15 games he appeared in. Across 29 total collegiate games, Weigman has completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 5,704 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions, while also running for 991 yards and 14 scores.

The native of Cypress, Tex., was a five-star recruit at Bridgeland High School and won the National High School Quarterback of the Year award. He was also considered one of the top baseball players in the state of Texas, but withdrew from the MLB Draft in order to focus on football.

Both McCown and Weigman will be eligible for the 2027 NFL Draft.

CFL teams can claim the rights to up to 45 players via the negotiation list on a first-come, first-served basis, provided that they are not eligible for the Canadian or Global Drafts, and do not have CFL veteran status. These players can be added, traded, or removed from the list at any time.

Being added to a negotiation list does not mean that the player has expressed interest in the CFL, and some are unaware that their rights have even been claimed. Players can only force their removal from the list if the team does not provide them with a minimum contract offer at their request.

In a corresponding move, the Stampeders removed Northwestern quarterback Preston Stone from their negotiation list.

The Calgary Stampeders (5-7) will visit the Edmonton Elks (9-3) at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday, September 12, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EDT. The two teams met in the Labour Day Classic last week, where the Elks won 38-28 at McMahon Stadium after rallying in the fourth quarter.
