Edmonton Elks can clinch playoff berth with win over Stampeders

The Edmonton Elks can clinch a playoff berth this weekend, the CFL confirmed in a press release on Wednesday.

The team can secure its postseason spot with a win over the Calgary Stampeders at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday. The Alberta rivals faced off the in annual Labour Day Classic on Monday, when the Elks scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to secure a 38-28 comeback victory.

Edmonton has not made an appearance in the CFL playoffs since 2019 when they finished fourth in the West Division standings at 8-10.

That year, the team crossed over to the East Division and defeated the Montreal Alouettes in the East Semi-Final by a score of 37-29 before losing the East Final to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats by a score of 36-16.

The last time the Elks made the playoffs in the West Division was 2017 after finishing in third place at 12-6. The club defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the West Semi-Final by a score of 39-32 before losing to the Calgary Stampeders in the West Final by a score of 32-28.

Edmonton has not hosted a playoff game since 2015, which is also the most recent time the club won the Grey Cup.

The team currently sits first in the West Division at 9-3, having won three consecutive games.

The Edmonton Elks (9-3) will host the Calgary Stampeders (5-7) at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday, September 12 with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EDT. The two teams met in the Labour Day Classic last week, where the Elks won 38-28 at McMahon Stadium after rallying in the fourth quarter.

The weather forecast in Edmonton calls for a high of 11 degrees with a 30 percent chance of rain. The game will be broadcast on TSN in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune-in on 770 CHQR in Calgary or 880 CHED in Edmonton.
