3DownNation CFL awards: the best and worst of Week 14

Labour Day Weekend has come and gone, giving us the chance to celebrate the best slate of games of the CFL regular-season.

These awards are selected by 3DownNation’s contributors and will be presented weekly throughout the 2026 season. Enjoy.

Offensive player of the week: REC Dhel Duncan-Busby, Saskatchewan Roughriders

The 26-year-old was brilliant for Saskatchewan in the Labour Day Classic, making 10 catches for 148 yards to help his team knock off the rival Blue Bombers in overtime. The Roughriders needed someone to step up in place of Kian Schaffer-Baker and Samuel Emilus, and Duncan-Busby has done just that. The Vancouver native now has 35 receptions for 504 yards and four touchdowns through 11 games this season, all of which are new career-highs.

Honourable mention: QB Chad Kelly, Toronto Argonauts

Defensive player of the week: LB Tyrice Beverette, Montreal Alouettes

The two-time All-CFL selection was all over the field for the Larks on Friday night, as he notched seven total tackles and one interception, which he returned 57 yards for a touchdown. Beverette has now tallied 40 defensive tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and one touchdown in what has become yet another standout season in La Balle Province.

Honourable mention: LB Nick Anderson, Edmonton Elks

Special teams player of the week: K Sean Whyte, B.C. Lions

The veteran placekicker was perfect against the Alouettes, going five-for-five on field goal attempts and one-for-one on convert attempts. The 40-year-old native of Surrey, B.C. set a new season-high with a 50-yard field goal, and also booted one from a distance of 45 yards.

Honourable mention: LB Melique Straker, Saskatchewan Roughriders

Breakout player of the week: REC Dorian Singer, Winnipeg Blue Bombers

It took the 23-year-old two-thirds of the season to get promoted from the practice roster, but it doesn’t appear he’ll be taken off the active roster anytime soon. Singer made five catches for 62 yards and one touchdown in his CFL debut, with the score coming on the final play of regulation to force overtime. Once a standout at the University of Arizona, Singer looks poised to become a household name in the CFL.

Honourable mention: DB Seyi Oladipo Jr., Saskatchewan Roughriders

Offensive line of the week: Saskatchewan Roughriders

The unit of Payton Collins, Zack Fry, Logan Ferland, Jacob Brammer, and Jermarcus Hardrick held Winnipeg’s pass rush at bay, allowing zero sacks during their win on Sunday. Saskatchewan was also able to run the ball relatively effectively, as Quali Conley recorded 14 carries for 59 yards and Tommy Stevens added 10 rushes for 29 yards and three touchdowns.

Honourable mention: Edmonton Elks

Coach of the week: HC Mark Kilam, Edmonton Elks

The Elks trailed by 14 points in the fourth quarter of the Labour Day Classic on Monday but never blinked, which feels like a testament to their head coach. Kilam has already led the Green and Gold to its best regular-season win total since 2018, and it feels like only a matter of time before Edmonton clinches its first home playoff game since 2015.

Best play of the week: Tyson Philpot’s diving catch

Philpot dusted veteran cornerback Garry Peters off the line, allowing him to run wide open into the deep third of the secondary. Davis Alexander slightly overthrew the pass but Philpot adjusted to its flight and dove to make the catch. The 26-year-old now has 98 receptions for 1,414 yards and 10 touchdowns on the season as he continues to shine brightly for the Alouettes.

Honourable mention: Tanner Cadwallader’s goal line stuff

Worst play of the week: Nick Anderson’s headshot

The veteran linebacker had an excellent performance for the Elks but marred it by delivering a reckless hit on Vernon Adams Jr. The quarterback tried to slide at the end of a scramble when Anderson lowered his head and struck the passer with the crown of his helmet. This is the type of hit the CFL is trying to eliminate from the game. The officials charged Anderson with roughing the passer, though it arguably should have been upgraded to a grade-two foul.

Honourable mention: Tyler Snead’s drop

Best game of the week: Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Saskatchewan Roughriders

This game was pretty miserable during the first and third quarters but the rest of it was good enough to make up for the parts that lacked. The record crowd of 34,352 was electric, Trevor Harris was sharp, Winnipeg mounted an impressive comeback, and Tommy Stevens got home for three scores. The CFL’s prairie rivalry usually lives up to the hype and this year was no different.

Honourable mention: B.C. Lions at Montreal Alouettes

Worst game of the week: Toronto Argonauts at Hamilton Tiger-Cats

This certainly wasn’t a bad game but it was the weakest of a relatively strong bunch. Toronto was decidedly the better team and any chance of a Hamilton comeback was snuffed out when Chad Kelly hit David Ungerer III for a 21-yard touchdown with just under two minutes to play. There was also a head injury sustained by Tre Ford, which put a damper on the affair.

Honourable mention: Edmonton Elks at Calgary Stampeders
