Week 4 of the 2024 CFL regular season is finished, which means we’re here to look back at the best and worst performances the week had to offer.
This wasn’t the most entertaining slate of games in CFL history, though fans were treated to three great finishes as Sean Whyte, Rene Paredes, and Lewis Ward each kicked walk-off, game-winning field goals.
These awards are selected by 3DownNation’s contributors and will be presented weekly throughout the 2024 season on Tuesday mornings. Enjoy.
Offensive player of the week: REC Tim White, Hamilton Tiger-Cats
The two-time CFL all-star was miserable over Hamilton’s first three games but finally came on against Ottawa, making eight catches for 118 yards and one touchdown. White also got involved in the return game after Lawrence Woods III went down due to injury, finishing the game with 212 combined yards. The Tiger-Cats might still be 0-4, but they’re far more likely to start winning with White at the top of his game.
Honourable mention: REC Cole Spieker, Montreal Alouettes
Defensive player of the week: DB Garry Peters, B.C. Lions
If you forgot that star receiver Eugene Lewis played in Thursday’s game, don’t feel bad — it’s just because Garry Peters completely erased the three-time East Division all-star. Peters finished the game with four tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble, helping his team win a third straight game. The interception was particularly impressive as he simply outmuscled Lewis at the point of attack to bring down the ball in the end zone.
Honourable mention: LB Frankie Griffin, Ottawa Redblacks

Special teams player of the week: K Rene Paredes, Calgary Stampeders
The future Hall of Fame inductee went a perfect four-for-four on his field goal attempts, including a game-winner from 52 yards out in overtime. The five-time CFL all-star and two-time Grey Cup champion is off to a perfect start to the season, making all 11 of his field goal attempts — two of which have come beyond 50 yards — to help the Stampeders reach a 2-1 start with wins over Hamilton and Winnipeg.
Honourable mention: K Sergio Castillo, Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Breakout player of the week: LB Geoffrey Cantin-Arku, Montreal Alouettes
The six-foot-two, 230-pound native of Lévis, Que. was taken ninth overall in the 2024 CFL Draft and looks like a steal so far, earning more and more reps on defence with each passing week in addition to his duties on special teams. Cantin-Arku was all over the field on Friday night, making four defensive tackles, two sacks, and one pass knockdown to help his team knock off the Toronto Argonauts.
Honourable mention: RB Greg Bell, Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Offensive line of the week: Calgary Stampeders
The unit of D’Antne Demery, Bryce Bell, Sean McEwen, Zack Williams, and Joshua Coker kept Jake Maier upright for the entire game against the Blue Bombers, allowing zero sacks, while Dedrick Mills, Tommy Stevens, Jalen Philpot, and B.J. Emmons combined for 69 yards along the ground. This marks the second time Calgary’s offensive line has won this award so far this season.
Honourable mention: B.C. Lions

Coach of the week: HC/OC Jason Maas, Montreal Alouettes
Montreal just keeps on winning, this time knocking off their strongest competition in the East Division in one-sided fashion on the road. Sure, the Argonauts scored a late touchdown, but Friday’s game never seemed in doubt as the Alouettes were dominant at times. Cody Fajardo and Tyson Philpot have become arguably the most dangerous quarter-receiver combination in the CFL under Maas, whose team is now 4-0.
Honourable mention: DC Brent Monson, Calgary Stampeders
Caleb Evans (@caleb_the_king1) may be sneaky but he’s good for more than just sneaks.

Best play of the week: REC Cole Spieker, Montreal Alouettes
The Alouettes rolled the dice on third-and-short on Friday night and it paid off in a big way in their win over Toronto. Caleb Evans snapped the ball from the team’s standard short-yardage formation but dropped back to pass and hit Cole Spieker, who’d gotten behind Leonard Johnson in coverage, for a 44-yard touchdown. Though it was still the third quarter, the score all but iced the game as Montreal improved to 4-0.
Honourable mention: P Jamieson Sheahan, Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Worst play of the week: Hamilton’s squib kick
What was Scott Milanovich thinking when his team booted a squib kick with 25 seconds remaining on Sunday? The Tiger-Cats were leading 22-21 when they inexplicably decided to kick short to Tobias Harris, who returned the ball to Ottawa’s 52-yard line. The Redblacks needed only two completions to get the ball into field goal territory and Lewis Ward made no mistake, booting a 46-yard game-winner with zeroes on the clock.
Honourable mention: QB Chris Streveler, Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Best game of the week: Edmonton Elks at B.C. Lions
This was hardly the best game we’ve seen so far this season, but it was the most consistently entertaining of a relatively boring bunch this week. Vernon Adams Jr. continued his M.O.P.-like campaign, the Elks made it interesting late, and Sean Whyte kicked a 42-yard game-winning field goal on the final play. Kudos to Edmonton for playing a solid game despite coming off a short week with cross-country travel.
Honourable mention: Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Ottawa Redblacks
Worst game of the week: Montreal Alouettes at Toronto Argonauts
The Winnipeg-Calgary and Hamilton-Ottawa games were hardly instant classics, but the East Final rematch between Montreal and Toronto was the only Week 4 contest that didn’t come down to a last-second, game-winning field goal, so it earns this dubious distinction. These two teams will meet again on July 11 at Percival Molson Stadium when the Alouettes will have a chance to clinch the season series.
Honourable mention: Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Calgary Stampeders
