3DownNation top 100 CFL players: No. 43 OL Shane Bergman, Calgary Stampeders

It says a lot about the next entry on this list that he was a first time all-star following a season where he surrendered the most sacks of his career.

The reason for Shane Bergman’s inclusion is because that career-high was two.

Only twice in 17 games in 2019 did someone get to the Calgary quarterback through Bergman. In 2018, that number was one. In both 2016 and 2017, it was even less as he gave up a half sack in each of those years.

Add all that up and consider this: Bergman has surrendered four sacks as a starter in the last four seasons where the Stamps threw the ball 2,516 times.

Calgary’s offensive coordinator Pat DelMonaco believes the low sack numbers are impressive, but not the whole story.

“He doesn’t allow pressures either,” DelMonaco said in an interview with 3DownNation. “When we have to design a double (coverage), we almost never have to shift that to Shane.”

DelMonaco added that Bergman “makes the players around him better” and said that the former Western University Mustang is also very good with his run blocking, making him a very productive player. Ka’Deem Carey will be the likely beneficiary when football resumes in 2021.

Bergman stands as a great example for when people laud John Hufnagel’s drafting prowess, as Bergman wasn’t taken until the sixth round in 2013 before taking over a starting role on his way to the 2014 Grey Cup, his first of two championships.

Long underappreciated when the all-star nods were handed out, Bergman finally got his name called in 2019. Assuming he is able to continue to stay healthy, it likely won’t be his last.
