The University of Regina Rams football team has been stripped of three wins for using an ineligible player.
According to Canada West, the unnamed player suited up for all of Regina’s games so far this season. The forfeits mean the Rams victories over Alberta, UBC and Manitoba will be changed to losses by a score of 1-0.
The release says “an oversight during Regina’s student-athlete intake and eligibility process” this summer led to the mistake, which was discovered by the university and reported to Canada West on Oct. 4.
“This is a heartbreaking situation for the student-athletes, coaches, members of the Rams organization, and the University of Regina community,” University of Regina director of sport Lisa Robertson said in the release. “The University will fully cooperate with U SPORTS as they review the situation. Additionally, we are launching an internal review of our student-athlete intake processes in order to minimize the risk of this happening again.”
The program may face additional sanctions from USports after the review.
With the forfeits, the Regina falls to 0-5 and now sit last place in Canada West.
