Riders release OL Travis Bond

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have released American offensive lineman Travis Bond, per sources.

Bond spent training camp with the Riders but didn’t impress enough to earn a roster spot. He was signed by the green and white in free agency to a one-year deal which included a chunk of signing bonus money between $20,000 and $30,000.

The 27-year-old started 16 games for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last season and he was a CFL all-star at guard in 2016. Bond has tremendous size at 6-foot-7, 360 pounds.

Bond was a seventh-round pick, 214th overall by the Vikings in 2013. He spent parts of two NFL seasons with Minnesota, Carolina and St. Louis playing in two games.

    Seriously?
This team is turning into career killers.
NO ONE who signs with the riders can succeed, it would seem.
Jones is going to have to learn to adjust his coaching style.

    • One player does not make up a team. But thanks for coming out with a typical “me first” Calgary attitude! How did that work out for the Stamps when it mattered? Oh right. You guys lost….again. Stick to your day job buddy. Management isn’t in the cards for you.

Hey Joseph how did overpaying jones and Murphy work for you and your sliders oh ya you never finished higher than 4 th place and 5 th again this year don’t give up your day job buddy management isn’t in the cards for you either

Jones said last night I’m”we gotta watch film”, meaning all coaches. Coach Sorrells has major input on the O-line. Maybe Bonds was out performed. Your assumption s seem to never be right.

  2. First Derek Dennis last season & now Bond. Love to see him back with the Bombers. I 8know the team has committed to 3 Canadian starters. How much bonus $$$ have the Riders lost cutting Grant, Bragg & Bond?

    • Just Bond’s signing bonus. As could be easily confirmed by anyone who cared to check. Ignorant comment.

  3. Just saying // June 9, 2018 at 7:19 pm //

    Or maybe he’s not good?

  4. Scottsask // June 9, 2018 at 7:21 pm //

So who in the heck is coming in???

  5. No worries, American OL are not difficult to find. CDN starters are the challenge.

    • Don’t tell that to the Ticats who took until Labour Day last year to get 2 decent American OTs in place. It’s not always as easy to find good ones as you think.

  6. True Green // June 9, 2018 at 7:29 pm //

    Whaaaaat???

  7. I’m quite enjoying all these roster moves today. If you don’t play well you are done and it’s as simple as that. There’s no free rides in pro sports.

  8. Paul Bomber // June 9, 2018 at 7:37 pm //

Surprising. I don’t know that I agree with comments above that say US OLine guys are easy to find, but I guess there was a reason Wpg thought they could get by without him. Are there cap issues in Regina?

  9. BlueBomberChris // June 9, 2018 at 7:40 pm //

Could it be he didn’t perform well because of the position they had him playing? I don’t follow the Riders too close but I had heard rumours they wanted him to play T when he seemed more comfortable at G, wondering if there was anything there or not?

Either way this is a surprise and the Riders have made some bold decisions today, can’t say CJ isn’t afraid to rock the boat so to speak.

Riders sending messages today. Your job is never safe. Names don’t matter, performance does and last night was brutal. None of us know how he looked through camp either or how his overall rating by the coaches are. It not just Jones, his assistants input is a major part. Very curious to see who plays right guard.

    • Sun always shines at McMahon // June 9, 2018 at 8:07 pm //

Well, if this is when and how Jones finally gets that message through, he’s already failed

    • Exactly. This is the way I see it. Jones was P.O.ed by what say yesterday and he’s getting out his big broom and getting rid of those who he feels didn’t give enough of an effort, and he’s sending a message in the process. Now, Jones always has a plan, and a plan B, and generally plan C, but what his plan is for the OL at this point is no clear to me. It’s going to be an interesting few days.

CFL all-star in 2016, 6’7″ 340 lbs. Maybe Jones should be cutting MacAdoo.

  12. Just saying // June 9, 2018 at 8:15 pm //

The writing was on the wall with these guys. No message being sent with these cuts. Bagg was only good for around 300 yards last year? And chad was old and pricey, Grant I believe was ousted because of younger talent Holly and Bond sucked all camp from what I’ve been hearing.

  13. They played like crap since training camp and looked terrible in 2 pre season games…I think these guys played themselves off the team that’s it…move on.. nothing else to see here

  14. Pennyrocker // June 9, 2018 at 8:35 pm //

Seriously if we don’t have enough problems with the O line.
Jones kicks another O lineman out. What next as the stomach turns another running back.

  15. Week 1 is going to start with a bang. Toronto at Saskatchewan. Can hardly wait.

  16. Serious import rb and ol are around. Cdn ol is what riders need. Only bladek and St. John currently in the stable.

  17. Paul Bomber // June 9, 2018 at 9:07 pm //

Ya know, you are bang on! Can’t wait! Seems to me there is a lot more unknowns than normal. (that passes for optimism here)

  18. Yycbanjopicker // June 9, 2018 at 9:12 pm //

Starting QB nearly gets murdered = shit hitting the fan.

  19. Let me take a stab at this.

    Scenario 1.
With the extra cap money the Riders sign Dyakowski. The starting 5 are then Vaughn-Labatte-Clark-Dyakowski-Coleman, and when Bladek and JSJ get healthy one of them takes over for Dyakowski giving him a rest and making him fresh for the playoff run.

    Scenario 2.
With the extra cap money we sign Campbell. VAughn then slides over to his natural guard position. The starting 5 would then be Campbell-Labatte-Clark-Vaughn-Coleman

    Scenario 3.
We sign both, giving us multiple options and protection against further injuries. With today’s cuts I think we’ll have cap space for both.

  20. Scottsask // June 9, 2018 at 11:22 pm //

Eddie Steele moves to Right Guard.

    • What!!!! I thought they might move Duron Carter there. He seems to think he can play everywhere.

  21. Former Rider fan // June 9, 2018 at 11:42 pm //

What’s next? Between Dennis and Bond we’ve established that for Chris Jones free agency isn’t the way build an O-line.
Draft and develop? That takes years.
Maybe scouting instead of try-out camps full of receivers would have been better.

    • Or, between Coleman and Campbell maybe we’ve established that free agency IS the way to build an OL. Or, with Bladek and JSJ said to be ready to start, perhaps we’ve established that drafting is the way to build an OL. Isn’t this fun? When you selectively use stats, as you have done here, you can get them to say pretty much anything you want!

  22. CalgaryISCold. // June 10, 2018 at 12:21 am //

Riders have a decent line but limited back ups. Only bladek and st John. Latter is a question mark.
Expect an mport OL to be flown in and 1 to 2 CFL CN OL cuts to be brought to Sask.

  23. Former Rider fan // June 10, 2018 at 12:56 am //

Are you serious? JSJ is going to save the day? I guess instead of just saying “Draft and develop” I should have said, ‘draft skillfully’.

    • Are you serious? Baked beans on toast?

This is another well used trick. Random nonsensical interjections can deflect attention away from something that you’ve just been caught doing. In this case you’ve been caught misusing stats to essentially lie, so you blurt out, “JSJ is going to save the day?” What does that even mean? Nothing. It’s just random nonsense intended to confuse and deflect attention away from what you’ve just been caught doing.

  24. ColdCalgary. // June 10, 2018 at 12:59 am //

Thanks No St. Is not the answer to the problem. But it’s all riders have. Sad but true.

  25. Who knows what JSJ brings this year. They have been very carefull with his hammy and perhaps he has been watched all off season , rumor at camp was that prior to camp he looked the best he ever has looked and was highly motivated. So bottom line as RDF said is that some people played there way off the team possibly. Jones knows what Peter D is capable of, if that is the way he choses to go, same of Campbell , thought Campbell like Thigpen has to sit 2 games if he is signed so no help vs Toronto or Ottawa. AS well if playing was not on Campbels mind , is he clean drug nutrition wise? Anyway we will see what Jones has in mind , they watched the tapes and made the decisions, hoping its not an issue with our Oline Coach that would be worst case scenario, but tine will tell.

Travis just won the lottery and will play for anyone other than Chris Jones, another team just got better.

  27. Edmontonasacitysucks. // June 10, 2018 at 1:47 pm //

Please pick him up. Winnipeg needs more Sask. cuts to improve their team,

  28. stamps4life // June 10, 2018 at 3:35 pm //

So this how players are treated and when players take signing bonus and then retire or hold out for more money they say players are not loyal. teams are loyal to no players and players should be loyal to no team as no contracts are guranteed
