Defensive coordinator Jeff Reinebold out as Ticats to shuffle coaching staff

The Ticats are set to shuffle their coaching staff, including a change at defensive coordinator.

Defensive coordinator Jeff Reinebold, who has been with head coach Kent Austin for his entire four-plus seasons in Hamilton, will be replaced by linebackers coach Phillip Lolley.

Reinebold took over the defence this season after spending four years as special teams coordinator but his unit has struggled so far. They are last in the CFL in points allowed (39.0 per game), net offence allowed (460 yards) and yards per play (7.5) among others. The Ticats are 0-6 on the season.

While there had been some speculation that Reinebold would remain with the club in some capacity, including working with new assistant head coach June Jones, tweets from Reinebold sent Monday afternoon indicate he is not staying on.

Lolley, joined the Ticats this season after spending three years with Chris Jones in both Saskatchewan and Edmonton. Before coming to the CFL, the 63-year-old Alabama native spent more than a decade with the Auburn Tigers of the NCAA as both a defensive coach and front office staff member.

Phillip who ?!? You freakin’ serious, this is the best Austin can do !?! Anyhow, while he was at it, why not officially instal June Jones as the OC. We all know that Steph, whatever his last name is, is a lame duck.

  2. Must be tough for Reinebold, but they had to do something. Good luck with the reboot, D.

  3. Angelo Bruno // August 7, 2017 at 2:18 pm //

Word is that the Argos signed former TiCat & former first overall draft pick Lyndon Gaydosh. Hamilton would have been wise to sign him as he still has untapped potential. Unfortunately, Gaydosh was grossly mismanaged in his time in the Hammer.

  4. Ticat Mike // August 7, 2017 at 2:18 pm //

    Rich Stubler..where are you?

  5. IMAN ICE HORSIE // August 7, 2017 at 2:27 pm //

Rich Stubler is getting on and not a solution in my opinion. Reinebold was in over his head. I still have no idea the appeal of this guy. Is it his California look? Outside of STC he’s proven a failure.

  6. Angelo Bruno // August 7, 2017 at 2:29 pm //

Agreed, would have reached out to Stubler who has a proven track record. This Phillip guy is a nobody. And now I hear that the TiCats are signing rejects from other teams once they are given their outright release … some Washington dude from the Eskimos.

I don’t know enough about Lolly to know how good he is but anyone that coached that long at a school like
Auburn has to be a pretty good coach. Unless I read it wrong, he was with Jones when he won the GC in Edmonton, that D was really good.

As a TiCats fan I liked Stubler when he was in Toronto, he made it easier for us to beat them.

  7. This is exactly what they need and what I have been calling for since week 2. I feel bad ehenever I suggest a person should lose his job, however, it has become very obvious that the Hamilton D is struggling in so many areas. Injuries are only a small part of it. Schematically, they have been awful most games. Early in the season, the cover zero blitzes got them torched. Every week, they have struggled and top players are not performing at elite levels. Promoting internally is best fit. Folks, it ain’t hockey. Mid season, a team cannot bring in a new coach from the outside. Schemes will change under new DC, but verbiage, terminology, etc. Must stay the same. Therefore an internal hire is smart. I like Reineboldt. I hope he stays with team. Weeks ago, I suggested he move back into special teams department. I think GE is a good man and a proven coach, but DC was , at thus point, something he simply failed to handle.

  8. Gaydosh was the best interior D lineman in the country with U of C and looked pro ready. Unfortunately, he sustained a major injury while with the Carolina Panthers (back). I believe he was actually on nei roster for the season despite the IR designation. He was swiftly cut the next season. He has not been the same since. If he can ever be truly healthy, he will become a major contributor. However after this many years, I am doubtful that he will ever be healthy enough to play like his old self. It is unfortunate as he looked destined for greatness in pro football.

What’s the word on Kanneh – is he done for the season ??? What about Davis & Butler – they close to returning ???

  10. john young // August 7, 2017 at 2:46 pm //

promote from within pigskin pete for the d seems like a rah rah type of guy and for the o anybody that knows how to run screens or draw plays…lol

  11. Ari Katz // August 7, 2017 at 2:46 pm //

The Ticats are listening. The least disruption comes from hiring within. Hopefully this helps the Cats to turn the corner. Suspect that both McNight and now Reinebold will now run special teams and then maybe we will see Speedy come back to life. Reinebold will also likely resume his old duties as linebacker coach. This move will also send positive vibrations right through the team and its fan base. Would love to still see Stubler brought into assist. Go Cats Go

  12. Well, hopefully this guy has learned some things about CFL defences from Chris Jones but will hopefully not have inherited any of the negative character traits that we could do without. Sounds like Austin is making the necessary changes both on offence and defence.

    • Phillip Lolley is a darn good football mind that has coached on a Grey Cup winning staff. He has a reputation as a very high character guy. I would advise those trashing the hire to actually read up on the guy before commenting from an uninformed place.

I was a fan of Coach Reinebold’s, both as a person and a pro, and wish him nothing but the best. Classy guy.

      • I hope nothing I said would be considered trashing – I am more than willing to give the guy a chance and I liked what I read about him.

  13. I really like Jeff Reinebold.
He brings a lot to the team.
Hope he and Jones can work together.s

  14. Just wondering but if Lolley was with Jones in both Edm and Sask the past two years, how or why did he leave to do the same linebackers coach here – why didn’t he stay with Jones in Sask? Was he fired or offered more in Hamilton or just needed a change?

  15. Tom Smagle // August 7, 2017 at 3:10 pm //

Any news on Sinkfield. Even if he idoes not make the NFL, highly doubt he sign-on to join the mess known as the TiCats.

  16. Bob McKnight // August 7, 2017 at 3:16 pm //

Jeff Reinebold is an inspirational coach. DC was just a little much for him. Don’t expect him to be gone because he was a key in getting June Jones here. I’m all for Philip Lolley getting his opportunity but what about Dennis McPhee? Could you have more credentials?

  17. These are moves to try and salvage the season and turn things around they have signed these coaches to one year deals you may see more changes in the off season if this experiment doesn’t work out . They seem to be slowly progressing on offence and there are 2 or3 key d guys coming back from injury not sure what to expect for the next couple weeks while these new systems are put into place but if everything starrs to get better could be a very interesting stretch run starting Labour day

  18. About time…season starts this week! Sadly at 0-6, we are right in the mix for 2nd in the East. The season is far from over… 1 win changes everything!

  19. Angelo Bruno // August 7, 2017 at 3:34 pm //

By the looks of Reinbiold’s Twitters it looks like he has be canned. The dismantling of the TiCats has begun … wonder when the hammer will fall for Ptaszek as he is virtually useless as well. Or are the TiCats keeping him in for PR reasons ???

    • Congratulations. I know that every career setback suffered by anyone associated with the Ticats organization will give you great pleasure. That’s just the kind of fan you are.

      • Angelo Bruno // August 7, 2017 at 4:20 pm //

        What you mean ?

        • I’ve read your posts. Should be obvious to you since you wrote them. You don’t like this current batch of personnel.

          • Angelo Bruno // August 7, 2017 at 4:47 pm //

Dude, it’s nothing personal … I like winning & this “current batch of personnel” ain’t getting it done … what’s the record over the last 15 games ??? Enough said – no !?!

  20. Oh boy. Things are officially getting desperate now.

  21. It’s safe to say Austin has lost more friends since his taking over than gained .I like Reinbold as our st guy not as our dc hate to say it but he had to go but sad to see him go completely..good luck in your future

  22. He will be back with Orlando by mid week

  23. mr62cats // August 7, 2017 at 4:06 pm //

Good luck to Jeff Reinbold. Austin made a huge mistake making him DC. He could still have been in that job.
I hope all these new appointments are interim only.Looks like Austin is trying to fix his problems on the cheap.Or out of desperation.

  24. mr62cats // August 7, 2017 at 4:07 pm //

Ooops. I need to add…about Reinbold “…in his old job as ST coach.”

  25. Sea of Dead // August 7, 2017 at 4:22 pm //

Where are all the Reinbold die-hards who said that his installation as DC was a great ‘continuity’ thing after Orlondo Steinauer departed? I and others were villanized when we warned about Reinbold’s pathetic record as a DC (Montreal) and HC (Winnipeg). Well, so much for that!!

  26. I know something had to be done, still hard to see Reinebold go seemed like a really good guy and a major contributor to any success Cats had in the past.Thought Reinebold was 1 0r 2 in the league as far as special teams Coordinators go but really struggled in his role this year.Would love to see Cats go After Steinhauer after the season for Head Coach and hopefully he could consider both Reinebold and Condell for there Previous Roles!

  27. Blackhawk89 // August 7, 2017 at 4:32 pm //

Chris Jones is on the phone now with Reinebold

  28. It’s Tillman who should be fired.

    • Angelo Bruno // August 7, 2017 at 4:49 pm //

Tillman, like Ptaszek, are patsy ‘yes’ men … hopefully, they too will soon be included in the purge …

    • Tillman has FAILED to bring in the men that FIT this team. Austin has failed to bring in the right staff to coach them, in fact the coaches he had are all jumping ship for some reason (speculation would be that Austin is too difficult to work with… just watch the way he conducts himself in interviews after a loss..nuff said) If you are looking for blame it starts at the top… Even Scott Mitchell will run out of time if this keeps going on. A half empty stadium will get some notice.

  29. Once again, Austin picked these guys and as head of football operations its on him.He can’t bend over and fire his own ass.

    • mr62cats // August 7, 2017 at 8:14 pm //

rick2: If this team keeps losing…..any decision on Austin’s future will be made by Scott Mitchell. No big thing. What’s your point here?

  30. Paul Garner // August 7, 2017 at 5:07 pm //

It’s always sad to see someone lose their job but this MISTAKE was made by Austin in the off season. And everything indicates that Austin made the same MISTAKE by hiring Ptaszek. Not that Ptaszek isn’t a good football man but its a matter that Austin doesn’t have any confidence in him or at least doesn’t appear to have. Will Austin take over the Defensive Coordinator’s like he has the Offensive Coordinator’s job. Me thinks he is doing too much and isn’t doing anything well. I really can’t blame him for making the change on defence as it was evident that they couldn’t win with the defence they had. Now, I just hope that he lets the new guy coach or at least gives him a chance. He never gave Ptaszek a chance other than the opening game of the 2017 season vs Argos.

    • Caledonian // August 7, 2017 at 8:15 pm //

Everyone dumping on Ptaszek, why? We have no idea what he can do. What we do know is that Kent Austin is a losing coach, and his ego and shitty attitude aren’t conducive to giving others independence. The play calls, the offensive schemes, all of it are on Austin, Ptaszek, just stands in when required or told.

  31. Something had to be done. Agree with appointing someone on staff for the continuity, but hopefully he shifts the philosophy because it wasn’t working (regardless of the offense’s inability to sustain drives and let the D have a rest). This may not be the last change we see on staff.

Thanks to Coach Reinebold though. Tough business, and he’s a good guy, but results matter. It’s clear he has had the respect of his players… if only his defense had been worthy of respect on the field.

  32. Something had to change with that awful defence. Sorry to see Reinebold go. He was an excellent Special Teams Coach.

  33. I agree msd with your comment. Although the offence has shown some improvement,it would be impossible to win any game if you’re giving up an average of 39 points a game. Austin made the error in the first place and now is scrambling to save the season. Let’s hope this works.

  34. warren mills // August 7, 2017 at 6:06 pm //

A long time ago, I had seasons at the old Bomber Barn, row five, 55, east side.
    Lions come to town.
After the warm up, Lions coach catches my 8 year old son’s eye, and throws him a ball…
Every Loogen bomber east-side fan yells “keep it!!!”
Jeff hold sup his hands, my son hesitates, and tosses it back. JR smiles, and tosses it back.
This goes back and forth a few times, JR smiles, holds the last catch and heads for the locker room.
My son goes on to play some serious ball, a few championships and MVP’s but that pitch and catch with JR remains his sport life hi-lite.
    Jeff’s good.

  35. Just saying // August 7, 2017 at 6:10 pm //

Chris jones should hire reinebold to take over the DC job in sask, it would be an improvement lol go riders

  36. I’ve met Reinbold on a couple of occasions, really nice down to earth guy.
    I wish him well!!

    • Angelo Bruno // August 7, 2017 at 6:44 pm //

Good for you Argo69 … when does Austin meet the press ??? I want to hear how he explains this debacle …

  37. Agree with previous comments, this is ALL on Austin. He’s V.P. of Football Operations, so he signed everyone, or did Tillman? In any event, it was obviously mistakes, with their record. Reinhold had a poor previous records as a D.C. NO way he was replacing O.S.’s shoes. Is Rich Stubler too old? At leAst he has a successful CFL record as a D.C. It has to be about money, Austin himself has a huge salary, June Jones must have been offered a good salary, to come up or back to the CFL to clean up the mess, or hole Ti-Cat’s have dug. Reinhold was JUST a scapegoat, somebody had to go. The defense is losing the games, and are depleted with injuries, but so are other teams (No excuse) Still.need better O Line, and sustained drives, to give the defense a rest and keep them refreshed. Too bad Ti-Cat’s we’re successful with Reinhold as S.T. Coach. Good Luck Jeff!

  38. Ari Katz // August 7, 2017 at 7:18 pm //

Bob Young mentioned some short term moves which I think we have now seen but I am not sure they are yet over. He also mentioned some long-term moves. Wondering what these are. Reading between the lines, I believe that June Jones is here for more than this season even though that is contrary to what has been announced. Looking forward to Austin explaining his way out of this mess tomorrow.

  39. frank emil sabados // August 7, 2017 at 7:39 pm //

Lolley no experience as a Defensive Coordinator , we ll see how thsi goes

    • And Claybrooks in Calgary had no experience as a DC before last season either! Sure didn’t hurt the Stamps who had a good D last season. Lolley might turn out to be very good too.

Unfortunate for Reinebold who is well liked by his players and a good coach, but something had to give and getting opposing offenses off the field, especially allowing teams to easily convert on 2nd and long, has been an issue so something had to give. If Reinebold is willing to stay in another capacity (if asked), then I’m all for that. Too much disruption on the coaching staff isn’t likely to be beneficial to the team.

  40. Ari Katz // August 7, 2017 at 7:46 pm //

Hold your horses. Mathew Scianetti reported less than ten minutes that Ticats are in talks with Reinebold for a new role. I hope so , he would be a good special teams assistant and who is going to replace him in terms of evaluating talent at off season camps? Hope they keep him.

  41. Not sure why there are so many comments about Rich Stubler. Is he even interested anymore. He is aged and not sure about his health. But most importantly, his bend but don’t break zone defense might struggle with the rules about illegal contact. When his defense was getting it done, DBs would collision and often mug the receiver at 7 or 12 yards downfield . A couple years ago, the rules committee decided to enforce the illegal contact beyond 5 yards and DB coaches and DCs has to adjust schemes and technique . Result was that the CFL became more wide open in the passing game as it was in the past, before the clutching.

  42. Wont be able to fix it ..about Personnel

    • Rob Sorenson // August 7, 2017 at 10:57 pm //

The personnel people are not the reason Steinhauer and Condell left. Austin has every title and makes all the big decisions, coaching and free agency. He’s the boss and probably had the final decision on Medlock, Ellingson, Grant and a lot of good players who are playing well for other teams. He coaches the QB’s and Collaros has gone backwards as a player.

Austin hired Reinbold and Ptaszek, now it looks like they are both the fall guys. Since June Jones is here to run the offence and if the media is telling the truth he is Tillman’s friend. I don’t know what is going on over there maybe it is coaching and mistakes by Tillman and Allemang, but the last person that I will listen too or Bob Young should listen too is a failed GM, right Michael P. McCarthy?

I think it is the coaching not the personnel, I may be wrong.

  43. You must evaluate the evaporators, and who is the elevator doing that ??

Don’t any of you get that.

  44. Caledonian // August 7, 2017 at 8:17 pm //

June Jones out of the league for over twenty years, no an answer. Rich Stubler 200 years old, not an answer.

  45. Not the answer! If you do not have talent then it does not matter who coaches. I hope I am wrong but time will tell.

  46. Velly interesting all this talk — but not funny, as a comic once said — Kent Austin stretched himself too far when he took all those jobs on — the same goes for Chris Jones — there aren’t a lot of Wally Buonos around. They are very rare. Too bad but barring some huge turnarounds these experiments might soon be over.

  47. Austin should have named Orlando steinour coach and stayed as gm players would have loved this

  48. Part of the game…, eeeeer…,
I like what transpired this week with the coaching Shack – Up on both sides of the Ball. Stephen is a smart guy and will rise to the occasion but NOT this year. Let’s hope the Defence becomes less complicated.
I’m very excited for ‘ THE RUN FOR THE GREY CUP “
