The Roughriders have cut quarterback Bryan Bennett, per sources.

The 25-year-old was the star of Saskatchewan’s green and white scrimmage with three touchdown passes, but his play in the pre-season 10-of-22 for 127 yards, one touchdown with a 79.2 QB rating led to his release.

Bennett spent the 2016 season on Winnipeg’s practice roster.

Hard to imagine how Bennett didn’t make it over Williams. Bennett was the better QB at camp and preseason but maybe Williams has more upside in Jones mind. Either way it shows preferential treatment towards Vince Young. If Jones was keeping 4 Young should have been gone

    • Williams performed much better in preseason and came in late to camp. Not to mention more upside. Williams also didn’t look lost during actual games.

Frustrating. Makes no sense keeping 30+ year old Young who has been out of the game for 5 years when Bennett showed upside and has spent a year in the league (whether on the practice roster or not).

  3. Wasn’t Dark enough for the meeting room. LOL

Not sure why this deserved its own post. Bennett was not a top prospect. He’d already spent two years on Winnipeg’s PR before we signed him. Yes, I know he was the next “great white hope” for that special group of Riderfans, but based on his football performance he clearly was beaten by Marquise Williams, and for the vast majority of us that’s what matters. Nothing surprising or controversial here.

  5. looked great in camp. not so good in the games. Lots of players have done great in practice but its about game play

  7. Jones probably felt it was too risky putting Williams on PR where he could be picked up by another team.

  8. they have released young to

  9. stampland they released young to so what do you have to bashjonesabout now oh that is right you will find something because you no everything about football

  10. You sure they released him? They couldn’t have ! Neh Neh assured us Not just an opinion once) REPEATED, as in Over and Over and OVER they they HAD to keep him and they would keep him coz Jones had to keep him to save face. Neh Neh ALWAYS knows what he’s talking about, doesn’t he?

Bennett is from here. Here is Hammond, Louisiana. He played at southeastern university. They average 200 people per game. This does not shock me. I couldn’t believe he was playing professional football.
