The Montreal Alouettes have signed Canadian defensive lineman Lwal Uguak following his stint in the NFL.

The six-foot-four, 261-pound edge rusher was waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with an injury designation late last month. He recorded two solo tackles, one sack, and one pass knockdown over three NFL preseason games.

Uguak was a first-round pick of the Alouettes in the 2023 CFL Draft and made 17 tackles and four sacks during the regular season. He also recorded five tackles in the East Semi-Final, one tackle in the East Final, and five tackles in the 110th Grey Cup, helping Montreal upset the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to end its 12-year championship drought.

“We are very happy to have Lwal back with us,” said general manager Danny Maciocia in a statement. “In his first year in 2023, he improved at an incredible pace in every game. He was a force for our defence in our successes, and we are all excited to have him back on our team.”

The native of Edmonton, Alta. made 69 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, four sacks, four knockdowns, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery over 34 collegiate games at the University of Connecticut. He finished his collegiate career at Texas Christian University, where he made nine total tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, and one fumble recovery.

The Alouettes (10-2-1) will visit the Ottawa Redblacks (8-4-1) on Saturday, Sept. 21 with kickoff slated for 3:00 p.m. EDT.
