The Montreal Alouettes have named Davis Alexander their starting quarterback ahead of Friday’s matchup with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Alexander replaced backup Caleb Evans in Montreal’s Week 8 victory over Saskatchewan, coming off the bench at halftime to complete 15-of-18 pass attempts for 178 yards and two touchdowns in the comeback. He has now supplanted Evans on the depth chart to earn his first career start.

The 25-year-old first joined the Alouettes in 2022, suiting up in 26 games primarily as the third-string quarterback. Prior to last week, he had attempted just 21 career passes, completing 14 for 145 yards and an interception. He also rushed for 22 yards and a touchdown.

A product of Portland State University, Alexander finished his collegiate career second all-time in school history with 9,215 passing yards and 63 touchdown passes as a Viking.

Franchise quarterback Cody Fajardo will not dress for this game, despite being removed from the six-game injured list earlier this week. The 32-year-old remains limited with a hamstring issue suffered during the club’s 37-18 loss to the Toronto Argonauts in Week 6 and will move to the one-game injured list, with Evans and James Morgan serving as the other two passers on the roster.

Fajardo started Montreal’s first six regular season games, completing 77.5 percent of his passes for 1,636 yards, 10 touchdowns, and four interceptions. He also ran the ball 24 times for 142 yards and one score.

The Alouettes roster remains otherwise unchanged this week, with no additions or subtractions. American defensive back Nafees Lyon will continue to serve as a healthy scratch while 11 players sit on the six-game injured list, including Canadian receiver Kaion Julien-Grant and kicker David Cote.

The Montreal Alouettes (6-1) will visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-5) on Friday, August 2 at 7:30 p.m. EDT.
