The Toronto Argonauts won’t have defensive lineman Jake Ceresna in the lineup on Thursday night when they take on the Montreal Alouettes as he’s been moved to the one-game injured list.
The 30-year-old native of New Fairfield, Conn. suffered a shoulder injury during last week’s loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He has recorded eight tackles and two sacks through four games with the Argonauts this season, his first with the team.
The six-foot-five, 295-pound defender was traded from Edmonton to Toronto this past off-season in exchange for Canadian receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr. Over 79 career CFL games as a member of the Ottawa Redblacks, Elks, and Argonauts, Ceresna has made 171 tackles, 39 sacks, and seven forced fumbles.
Ceresna will be replaced in the starting lineup by rookie Derek Parish, who was a seventh-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Argonauts will also be without Canadian receiver Tommy Nield this week, who was moved to the six-game injured list. DaVaris Daniels will take over his starting spot at field-side slotback, while Makai Polk will start in Daniels’ usual spot at boundary slotback. The team has also made a change in the secondary, starting Amani Dennis at boundary halfback in place of Mason Pierce, who has been moved to the practice roster.
Toronto are coming off a 30-23 loss to Saskatchewan during which starting quarterback Cameron Dukes threw four interceptions. The second-year CFL passer is now 3-3 as a starter dating back to last season and has thrown for 873 yards, five touchdowns, and five interceptions thus far in 2024.
The Argonauts lost to Montreal in Week 4 by a score of 30-20 as Cody Fajardo threw for 284 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Caleb Evans also threw a touchdown pass on a surprise third-down long bomb, hitting Cole Spieker for a 44-yard score. The Argonauts were undisciplined in the loss, taking 11 penalties for 120 yards.
The Toronto Argonauts (2-2) will visit the Montreal Alouettes (5-0) at Percival Molson Stadium on Thursday, July 11 with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. EDT.
