Alouettes tap QB Caleb Evans for final preseason start

The Montreal Alouettes will be fielding an inexperienced lineup for their final preseason game on Friday against the Ottawa Redblacks.

Veteran backup Caleb Evans will get the start under centre with Cody Fajardo not expected to dress, along with most of the team’s starters. Davis Alexander and James Morgan will also receive considerable playtime.

It would appear that the battle at running back has fully wrapped up, with projected starter Walter Fletcher not in the lineup and veteran Canadian Jeshrun Antwi and Sean Thomas-Erlington also sitting out. That will mean a bevy of reps for American Stevie Scott III as he tries to earn a practice roster spot, as well as sixth-round draft pick Mike Herzog.

Just two starters are expected to play on offence with left tackle Nick Callender and centre Justin Lawrence both suiting up. That rises to three on defence, though defensive backs Najee Murray, Nafees Lyon, and Dionte Ruffin are all listed in spots other than their usual starting ones.

The Alouettes will visit Ottawa at 7:00 p.m. ET on May 31. Final cuts have to be submitted by 10:00 p.m. local time the following day.
