Retired CFL offensive lineman Jon Hameister-Ries passes away at age 37

The B.C. Lions announced on Monday that former offensive lineman Jon Hameister-Ries has passed away at the age of 37.

The native of Edmonton was a second-round pick in the 2007 CFL Draft out of the University of Tulsa. He signed with B.C. following a brief stint with the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL and spent seven seasons with the team, winning a Grey Cup in 2011.

The six-foot-six, 285-pound blocker pursued a career as a restauranteur and financial planner following his retirement. He competed on season two of MasterChef Canada before opening his restaurant Meat City in Vancouver in 2015.

As of the publishing of this article, Hameister-Ries’ cause of death remains unknown. We will update this story as more information comes available.
