Saskatchewan Roughriders add inaugural UTRGV quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger to negotiation list

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have added American quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger to their exclusive negotiation list.

Marburger concluded his collegiate career at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where he led the Vaqueros to a 9-3 record in their first season of existence as a Division I program. The six-foot-two, 215-pound pivot completed 199-of-305 passes (65 percent) for 2,780 yards, 31 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, while adding 308 yards on the ground and four rushing majors. He was subsequently named the Southland Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, and first-team All-Southland.

The Mission, Tex., native transferred after four seasons with the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he played sparingly in a backup role. He appeared in 18 games with the Roadrunners, connecting on 65-of-120 pass attempts (54.2 percent) for 777 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions.

Marburger went unselected in the 2026 NFL Draft and did not land a contract afterward. He remains a free agent.

CFL teams can claim the rights to up to 45 players via the negotiation list on a first-come, first-served basis, provided that they are not eligible for the Canadian or Global Drafts, and have never played in the league before. These players can be added, traded, or removed from the list at any time.

Being added to a negotiation list does not mean that the player has expressed interest in the CFL, and some are unaware that their rights have even been claimed. Players can only force their removal from the list if the team does not provide them with a minimum contract offer at their request.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-1) will host the Edmonton Elks (5-1) at Mosaic Stadium on Thursday, July 23, with kickoff scheduled for 9:00 p.m. EDT. The Elks survived a late scare to beat the B.C. Lions this past week, while the Roughriders were on bye.
