Bobblehead tribute prompted ’emotional week’ for Montreal Alouettes’ Davis Alexander

There were thousands of them scattered around Percival Molson Memorial Stadium on Thursday night. For fans, the Davis Alexander bobblehead was a collectible celebrating the rise of the Alouettes’ franchise quarterback. For the Gig Harbor, Wash., native, however, it represented something much more personal.

The 27-year-old spent the week reflecting on the journey that brought him to this moment, with several family members making the trip to Montreal to soak in the celebrations. However, it was the memory of the one who could not be there to witness it that loomed largest.

“Honestly, it was a very emotional week for me,” Alexander said after Montreal’s 46-16 win over Ottawa. “I’m super thankful I was able to bring my family out: my mom, my brother, my step-mom. But again, it was heavy. It was a heavy week for me. I missed my dad a lot this week.”

Alexander lost his father, Matt, to lung cancer almost two years ago exactly — August 31, 2024. He was just 56 years old. Many of the quarterback’s accomplishments since have carried additional meaning as a result, and he knows his dad would have cherished this one in particular.

“That motivates me a lot too,” he said. “This seems like a monumental night for me and my family, and that’s something my dad would absolutely love. He would have thought it was the coolest thing ever. I’m so thankful, and I think that’s one of the coolest milestones of my career — a bobblehead.”

Alexander understands exactly what receiving a bobblehead means from a fan’s perspective, which is what made the moment even more special.

“I remember having bobbleheads, me and my brother,” he recalled. “I remember one time forcing my mom to take us to a San Francisco Giants game so we could get Moisés Alou bobbleheads. It always meant something to me.”

When the Alouettes informed Alexander he would be receiving the same treatment, there was only one thing on his mind.

“When I told my family, it was a no-brainer. I needed to find a way to get them here.”

The first 5,000 fans in attendance received the limited-edition collectible. They were a hot commodity, and their popularity has made it difficult for even the man featured to get enough for his inner circle.

“I’m taking as many as I can, 200-plus requests for bobbleheads, and I’m like, ‘I can’t,'” Alexander said with a laugh. “I’ve got to figure it out, maybe start stealing some.”

The Portland State product finished 20-of-22 for 260 yards and two touchdowns, exiting the game after three quarters with a blowout already assured.

While the night revolved around him and his success, Alexander made it clear that individual recognition is not what drives him.

“We’re chasing greatness,” he said. “We believe that we’ve got a lot more in the tank. We’re trying to do something that’s never been done before in everything that we do. We’re trying to figure out the next feat, but most importantly, it’s about winning. If we win this game, 1-0. We win this game, 1-0.”

For one night, Alexander was the face of the most sought-after giveaway in Montreal. When he left Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, there was only one thing on his mind: getting ready for the next game.
