Drew Willy, Argos agree to terms on new contract

Drew Willy and the Argonauts have agreed to a new contract, as first reported by Kirk Penton.

The 30-year-old quarterback was scheduled to receive a $100,000 off-season bonus on Jan. 15, but the pivot and team came together on a fresh pact in advance of that date.

Willy received a $70,000 signing bonus and an extra year on the deal, putting him under contract with Toronto through the 2018 season. If he starts every game in 2017, the six-foot-four, 220-pound signal caller will earn just over $305,000 and more than $415,000 should the same scenario play out in 2018.

After being acquired by the Argos in September, Willy played four games in double blue completing 77 of 113 passes for 681 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

  4. Doesn’t make any sense, he couldn’t cut it in Winnipeg, they should grab Durant if they can…

  5. Obviously the Argos do not agree with you. Drew will be fine. Good luck Drew.

C’mon folks, stop speculating about this guy and just look at Willy’s record as a starter in the CFL. 9 wins and 22 losses. That ain’t worth more than $150,000 a year, yet he gets close to $400k. In fact Willy isn’t worth having on a team at any price because he’s a LOSER. Trump is an idiot but he’d be right about Willy – “loser” – it’s the only way you can look at his career so far. At age 30 the guy should have proven his worth by now. His record suggests at best he’ll go 6 and 12 in 2017. The dimwits (Milanovich, Barker, and new ownership) at the Argos helm just want to lose again, on salary and on the field. Ask yourself – would Bill Belichick stay with Willy and his losing record?? Would Bill Belichick be party to a trade that sent an allstar D back (TJ Heath), the #1 draft choice in the 2017 CFL draft, a 3rd round choice in 2018 for a losing CFL QB? No, Belichick is not suicidal.

    • As football is a team sport where winning or losing is dependent on more than one person, the Argos must believe that they can create a situation where Willy can thrive. Barker and Milanovich have been around the league long enough to know talent when they see it. So while everybody very well could be absolutely right about Willy, I am willing to see what happens before making any judgment.

Once upon a time, Bill Belichick’s nickname was Bill Beli-CHOKE and fans were calling for his head. Nowadays, people use him as a standard of excellence.

perhaps it has to do with GM’s limited grasp on the CFL and his willingness to push around ownership for whatever but Drew has to focus or we call in Sports Illustrated to investigate.

  7. Bomber Fan here : When we picked him up he had under 1,300 yards are a CFL QB and we basically had no choice as Burris and Collaros weren’t coming here. He was good for his first half season before getting injured. Lead league in TD’s and passing… BUT after that injury and our embarrassing offensive line he was never the same. His play with the Argos last year was terrible and a lot of it came in garbage time too.

Hopefully he can get back on track but personally I feel his careers done.

He had better have a good supporting cast or Toronto is screwed. after last year’s fiasco no one will show up at the games unless they start to win.

Attendance problems for Argos are NIT going to go away regardless of how Drew plays. Ship has sailed wrt to football in Toronto, I’m afraid. Sad but true. Just a question of time before the Argos are no more…..

  9. Argos save some face.

Willy gets a chance. He has the tools, he just needs:
    a) To be surrounded by talent. Of course all QBs need that, but Willy has never struck me as one who elevates the team with his presence.
    b) To stay healthy.

I wonder what other bonuses are involved, beyond those for starting.

  10. the 70k is just for the argos to save face for the deal to get Willy. If he falters after a couple months he will be cut but to be fair, he really didnt have a veteran crew of receivers either last year. Dan Lefevour will be the starter by labour day…..

  13. yah your right DL will be free agent, I actually thought he played very well given the chance last year… but he could back up anywhere

  14. He’s done. I can’t believe Milanovich & Barker are willing to bet their jobs on this guy. He’s got the jimmy legs in the pocket and that will never change

  15. Mike Rudy // January 5, 2017 at 10:52 pm //

Looks like Barker will be again in charge in “17 by long term QB planning. If entire football operations are being reviewed – as fans were led to believe – why do Barker and Milanovich deserve to continue making football business decisions. Why the long silence from Copeland?

  16. Lefevour has way more upside then Willy you just have to put an offensive pkg together that utilizes his mobility. Or spend money on the O-line and keep Ricky protected much better
