The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have signed franchise quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell to a contract extension through 2028, the team announced on Friday. He was already under contract for 2027.
“I love this team, this locker room and this city. Being sidelined this year only reinforced how much I want to be out there competing with these guys,” said Mitchell in a statement.
“I’m close to being fully recovered, recharged and excited about what’s ahead. I believe we have the people and the commitment to win here, and I am committed to bringing a championship back to Hamilton.”
The 36-year-old got off to a strong start to the season, completing 78.2 percent of his passes for 1,107 yards, nine touchdowns, and one interception over four games. He suffered a season-ending ankle injury against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in July.
The Tiger-Cats quickly indicated that Mitchell would be out long-term, and could miss the rest of the year. He was subsequently officially ruled out by head coach Scott Milanovich in mid-September. Two weeks later, Hamilton was officially eliminated from playoff contention.
“Our commitment to Hamilton is to give this city a team it can be proud of and a team that can win championships. That starts with great players and strong leaders who share that goal,” said president of football operations Orlondo Steinauer.
“Since Bo arrived four years ago, he’s continued to work, compete and lead at a high level. He’s been a great teammate, has earned the respect of everyone in our organization and has embraced the Hamilton community.
“We’re proud to have him continue to lead us. His decision to stay, along with other key members, reflects the belief in what we’re building and the continued commitment from ownership to bringing a championship back to Hamilton.”
Mitchell is a two-time Grey Cup champion, two-time Grey Cup Most Valuable Player, two-time All-CFL selection, two-time CFL passing leader, and two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player.
Over 211 career regular-season games, the six-foot-one, 210-pound passer has thrown for 45,426 yards, 271 touchdowns, and 129 interceptions, and rushed for 1,049 yards and 14 scores.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-12) will host the Ottawa Redblacks (1-16) at Hamilton Stadium on Saturday, October 24 with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET. The Redblacks are coming off a dramatic win over the Toronto Argonauts that ended their 22-game losing skid, while the Tiger-Cats were on bye this past week.
The game will be broadcast on TSN in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune-in on TSN 1200 in Ottawa and the Ticats Audio Network in Hamilton.
