Chad Kelly won’t become ‘Checkdown Charlie’ after second four-interception performance of 2026

Toronto Argonauts’ quarterback Chad Kelly tossed four interceptions in a single game for the second time this season on Thursday night, but don’t expect him to stop gunslinging as a result.

“If I’m not aggressive, then they might start calling me ‘Checkdown Charlie,’ and that’s not how I play the game,” Kelly told the media following Toronto’s 33-30 win over the Calgary Stampeders.

“I obviously take what the defence gives me, meaning sometimes I’ve got to calm it down a little bit too. There’s a time and place, and I think when it matters most, that’s when you’ve really got to execute at a higher level.”

The 32-year-old pivot was already tied for the CFL lead in interceptions entering Week 10, having thrown nine through seven games. Thursday’s result pushed that total up to 13 on the year, equaling a single-game high set in Week 3 against the Ottawa Redblacks.

Kelly turned the ball over for the first time on the Argos’ second series of the night, as a wide-side throw to Damonte Coxie on a comeback was picked off by a diving Ben Labrosse. He’d force the ball into harm’s way again before the opening frame was over, floating a pass directly into the belly of Anthony Johnson in the no-man’s land between Coxie and Makai Polk.

The run of interceptions continued early in the second half, as another long throw to Kevin Mital ended up in the hands of Adrian Greene, who returned it 67 yards for a go-ahead Calgary touchdown. Later in the third quarter, he took an ill-advised shot towards Coxie in the end zone, which Labrosse high-pointed for his second takeaway of the game.

“You’ve got to take some positives. Obviously, some of the things I’ve got to correct. I’m not trying to launch the ball up. Maybe if it’s (cover) zero and I make someone miss, still giving them an opportunity, but we’re in the red zone,” Kelly said.

“It’s a team game. It’s not just offence, it’s not just defence. It’s all three phases, and everybody came to play. I’ve got to do a lot better to put us in better situations, but we’ll clean it up.”

Kelly was making his return to the field after he was knocked out of Toronto’s Week 8 victory over the B.C. Lions with a reported neck injury caused by a late hit to the head while sliding. The former Most Outstanding Player and head coach Mike Miller both denied that the injury had any lingering effect on his performance, with the quarterback telling 3DownNation he was “good.”

While some coaches may have been ready to pull the trigger and bench their starter after a quartet of giveaways, Miller indicated that he never contemplated sending backup Nick Arbuckle into the game. Despite it all, his trust in Kelly was unshaken.

“No, I was never considering the switch,” he insisted.

“It’s just more coaching in the moment. He and I always have that relationship where we’ll talk about, ‘Remember, it’s managing in that situation,’ ‘Be alert for that,’ ‘Hey, they did this coverage-wise,’ and he’ll share with me as well. Some of those (interceptions) were tough. I’ve said that since the very beginning; that’s been a process, and there are always going to be throws that we wish we had back. But Chad gives us a chance every week, and I’m sure glad he’s an Argo.”

Miller’s faith wasn’t misplaced. With the game tied at 30 with 57 seconds remaining, Kelly once again leaned aggressive on second-and-10 from the Calgary 43-yard line and loaded up for Coxie on the left sideline. The pass was a perfect drop in the bucket for 31 yards, which set up a chip-shot game-winning field goal with mere seconds remaining.

“That’s something that we obviously work on. If we see something, hey, give him a signal, or, hey, we call it in the huddle,” Kelly said of the play. “He made a play when it mattered most, and that’s what it’s about: chemistry.”

“It’s CFL football at its finest,” Miller added. “This game isn’t over until it’s over. We all know what those last three minutes are.”

Kelly finished the night 30-of-43 passing (69.8 percent) for 349 yards and a touchdown, in addition to his bushel of interceptions. His fearlessness with the football put the result in jeopardy, but also delivered the win, highlighting the dichotomy of his skill set.

Shockingly, the native of Buffalo, N.Y., is now undefeated in 2026 when he’s thrown four picks. He blew out the Redblacks by a score of 44-24 the first time around, while squeezing past Calgary on this occasion.

“We executed when it mattered most, and we got the win,” Kelly emphasized.

The Toronto Argonauts (4-4) will return to action on Saturday, August 15, when they visit the Edmonton Elks. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. EDT at Commonwealth Stadium.
