Montreal Alouettes add two-time national champion, return specialist Mekhi Mews

The Montreal Alouettes have signed American receiver Mekhi Mews to their practice roster.

The five-foot-eight, 185-pound speedster capped his collegiate career at the University of Houston, where he caught 35 passes for 277 yards and a touchdown in 25 games. He primarily excelled as a returner with the Cougars, fielding 26 kickoffs for 600 yards and 39 punts for 258 yards and one major.

Mews transferred from the University of Georgia, where he was a part of two CFB National Championship victories as a walk-on. In 18 games for the Bulldogs over three seasons, he caught 15 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown, returned 20 punts for 205 yards and a touchdown, and fielded 15 kickoffs for 402 yards. He earned the nickname ‘Waffle House’ for always being open.

The native of Grayson, Ga., went unselected in the 2026 NFL Draft. He later attended rookie mini-camp with the New Orleans Saints, but did not sign a contract.

The Alouettes recently released veteran return specialist Mario Alford, though fellow returner DeVonte Dedmon appears primed to return from injury this week.

The Montreal Alouettes (5-1) will host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-3) at Percival Molson Stadium on Sunday, July 26, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EDT. The Tiger-Cats narrowly beat the Toronto Argonauts this past week, while the Alouettes completed their home-and-home sweep of the Calgary Stampeders.
