The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have signed Canadian kicker Marc Liegghio.
The Woodbridge, Ont. native was selected by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the fifth round of the 2020 CFL Draft after a record-setting U Sports career for Western University. He was the team’s primary punter as a rookie in 2021 and performed all three kicking jobs for the team last season, but was cut following training camp in 2023.
In 32 career games, Liegghio has connected on 37-of-47 field goal attempts (78.7 percent) while hitting 61-of-69 point-afters (88.4 percent), registering 172 points. He has also punted 183 times, posting a gross average of 45.3 yards and a net average of 36.1 yards.
In a corresponding move, the team has placed American kicker Seth Small back on the suspended list. The 23-year-old was absent for the entirety of training camp but was activated ahead of Week 1, hitting one 31-yard field goal. He’ll now step away from the team for a second time.
Small was initially cut by the Ticats after training camp in 2022 but rejoined the team in July. He dressed for 14 games and made 39-of-43 field goal attempts (90.7 percent) along with 26-of-27 one-point convert attempts (96.3 percent).
The native of Katy, Texas participated in minicamp with the Indianapolis Colts after going unselected in the 2022 NFL Draft. He played 46 games over four seasons at Texas A&M University (2018-2021), making 71-of-91 field goal attempts (78 percent) including a career-long 52-yard field goal.
The Ticats (0-1) will visit the Toronto Argonauts (0-0) on Sunday, June 18 at 7:00 p.m. EDT.
