Canadian defensive back Benji Sangmuah has accepted an NFL rookie mini-camp invite from the Indianapolis Colts, per sources.
Sangmuah started at strong-side linebacker, cornerback and free safety during his time at the University of British Columbia. He’s represented by Montreal-based agent Sasha Ghavami.
Born in Ghana, but raised in Scarborough, Ont., Sangmuah began playing football five years ago, shortly after his Grade 12 high school year. He started for four seasons with the Thunderbirds under defensive coordinator Pat Tracey. The 22-year-old recorded 162 defensive tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 29 pass breakups, five interceptions, and five forced fumbles in 41 career U Sports games.
The six-foot-one, 194-pound cover man ran a 4.44-second 40-yard dash at UBC’s pro day in March. He ran a 4.28-second short shuttle, 7.01-second three-cone drill, posted a 37-inch vertical, 10-foot, nine-inch broad jump and put up 225 pounds 13 times on the bench press.
NFL rookie mini-camps allow prospects to compete against draft picks and undrafted free agent signees in an organized team setting. Canadians have translated invitations into NFL contracts in the past, most recently Wilfrid Laurier University quarterback Taylor Elgersma with the Green Bay Packers in 2025.
Sangmuah ranks in the top five among 3DownNation analyst J.C. Abbott’s defensive back prospects in the 2026 CFL Draft. His stock is not expected to be significantly affected by his NFL opportunity, but that could change if he earns a contract south of the border.
The 2026 CFL Draft is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, at 7 p.m. ET. Indianapolis rookie mini-camp runs from Thursday, May 7, to Sunday, May 10.
