Former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau has been living his best life since leaving public office, and that includes showing off his CFL fandom in new and unique places.

The 54-year-old spent Saturday night at the famed Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Cal., alongside his pop star girlfriend, Katy Perry, in order to watch fellow Canadian and headliner Justin Bieber perform. Perry posted photos and videos of the couple to her Instagram account, showing Trudeau rocking a backwards Montreal Alouettes hat along with a white t-shirt and jeans.

Though his father, long-time Canadian prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, was not a football fan, the younger Trudeau’s support for the Alouettes is well documented. During a chance encounter with the team at the Calgary airport in 2021, he publicly admitted to being a “fanboy.” In 2025, he lent his voice to a promotional video montage of famous Quebecers cheering on Montreal ahead of the 112th Grey Cup.

Trudeau spent a decade as the leader of the Canadian government before stepping aside in March 2025, allowing Mark Carney to take over the Liberal leadership and become the country’s 24th prime minister. Rumours about his relationship with Perry began later that year, before the couple made things public in December.

While a private citizen wearing a hat is hardly a ground-breaking revelation, on this occasion, it creates significant free publicity for the Alouettes organization. Perry is among the best-selling musical artists in history and boasts seven Diamond-rated singles, including “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” and “Firework.” Her Instagram account is the 21st most popular on the entire platform, with over 200 million followers.

The Alouettes have already capitalized on that exposure, adding one of the top comments to the post complimenting Trudeau on his hat choice and offering Perry some merch of her own.

Only time will tell whether the 41-year-old singer’s next pop hit features air-horn accompaniment.

The Montreal Alouettes were relatively quiet in free agency, though they still added quarterback Dustin Crum, receiver Jerreth Sterns, and return specialist DeVonte Dedmon. The team also suffered some key losses, including Austin Mack (Edmonton Elks), linebacker Darnell Sankey (B.C. Lions), defensive back Marc-Antoine Dequoy (retirement), and return specialist James Letcher Jr. (Saskatchewan Roughriders).

The Alouettes hold the eighth overall pick in the 2026 CFL Draft, which is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m. EDT. All CFL training camps are scheduled to open on May 10. The team will play its first preseason game against the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday, May 22, and its first regular-season game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Thursday, June 4.

In 2025, Montreal finished second in the East Division standings with a 10-8 record and beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the East Final before losing the 112th Grey Cup to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
