Former CFL quarterback Wally Gabler has passed away at the age of 80, the Toronto Argonauts announced on Thursday.
Gabler spent seven seasons in the CFL, first joining the Argonauts in 1966. He would go on to appear in 94 games with Toronto, Winnipeg, and Hamilton, throwing for 13,080 yards, 61 touchdowns, and 118 interceptions. The six-foot-two, 195-pound pivot also rushed for 1,777 yards and 11 majors along the ground.
The native of Portsmouth, Oh. retired in 1972 after returning to the franchise for one final campaign. He still sits eighth on Toronto’s all-time passing yardage list with 8,410 and tenth in passing touchdowns with 41. After retirement, he served as a colour commentator for the CFL on CTV in 1974.
Prior to his time in the CFL, Gabler played collegiately for the University of Michigan. He won a Big Ten Championship as a backup in 1964 before starting five games the following year.
