The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed American receiver Dillon Mitchell, who was released by the Edmonton Elks this past week. It’s a one-year deal for the 2025 season.
The six-foot-one, 190-pound native of Memphis, Tenn. made 58 catches for 727 yards and four touchdowns with the Elks this past season, starting all 18 regular season games. He also returned 19 punts for 172 yards and 23 kickoffs for 535 yards.
Mitchell originally joined Edmonton in 2022 when he made 35 receptions for 637 yards and four touchdowns over nine games. In total, the 27-year-old has recorded 130 grabs for 1,896 yards and 12 touchdowns, two carries for 23 yards, 31 punt returns for 254 yards, and 25 kickoff returns for 571 yards over 45 career regular-season CFL games.
The University of Oregon product was named second-team All-Pac-12 as a junior in 2018 when he caught 75 passes for 1,184 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was selected in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings and spent his rookie year on the team’s practice roster. He was cut in 2020 without seeing any regular-season action with the club.
Mitchell’s signing came only four days after the Blue Bombers lost rookie sensation Ontaria Wilson to the NFL. The 25-year-old caught 71 passes for 1,026 yards and three touchdowns this past year, helping the Blue and Gold reach the Grey Cup for the fifth straight season.
Kenny Lawler and Dalton Schoen, Winnipeg’s two star receivers, remain set to become free agents on Feb. 11.
