Edmonton Elks’ quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson has not made many friends in the CFL head office this year, violating the league’s Code of Conduct for the third time in Week 18.
The 36-year-old was issued a fine by the CFL for bringing the league into disrepute via comments made to the media after criticizing the officials following his team’s loss to Saskatchewan. Bethel-Thompson took issue with a fourth-quarter video review which overturned a critical goal-line catch by Javon Leake, calling it “bogus” and a “ridiculous call.”
While the quarterback insisted that the play should not have been reviewed without a coach’s challenge as it was not a scoring play, he was incorrect in his criticism. The CFL has automatically reviewed all potential scoring plays since 2018, meaning that every start of the six-year vet’s career has been played under those rules.
Bethel-Thompson has not been shy about criticizing the league office or commissioner Randy Ambrosie throughout his time in the CFL. He has already been fined twice this season for public complaints about the league’s schedule, which he views as unsafe due to the existence of short weeks.
As per CFL policy, the fine amount was not disclosed. The maximum fine allowable under the terms of the current collective bargaining agreement is equal to half a game cheque.
Five other players were also fined for their actions in Week 18, including Hamilton offensive lineman Jordan Murray and Saskatchewan strong-side linebacker C.J. Reavis being punished for non-football acts after the whistle. Edmonton linebacker Nyles Morgan and B.C. defensive tackle Jonah Tavai were dinged for illegal blocks, while Hamilton safety Stavros Katsantonis was disciplined for a high hit.
The Edmonton Elks (5-11) will visit the Calgary Stampeders (4-10-1) on Saturday, October 12 at 3:00 p.m. EDT, though Bethel-Thompson will not dress with the team already eliminated from the playoffs.
