The UBC Thunderbirds are back on the U Sports football rankings following a 32-30 win over the Calgary Dinos.
Running back Isaiah Knight had a career day for the Thunderbirds, rushing 24 times for 235 yards and one touchdown and catching two passes for 33 yards. The Dinos took the lead in the fourth quarter following a Dom Britton touchdown plunge but Kieran Flannery-Fleck made two late field goals, including a 22-yarder with 59 seconds left to ice the game.
The win gave UBC sole possession of second place in the Canada West standings, putting them in position to host a playoff game. The Thunderbirds are scheduled to visit the Alberta Golden Bears this week before finishing the season with dates against Calgary and Manitoba.
The top six spots in the rankings remained the same as the Laurier Golden Hawks, Montreal Carabins, Laval Rouge et Or, Western Mustangs, Windsor Lancers, and Bishop’s Gaiters held firm from No. 1 to No. 6. The Manitoba Bisons and Queen’s Gaels flipped to No. 7 and No. 8, respectively, as the Bisons beat the Regina Rams 22-13 at Princess Auto Stadium and Queen’s got crushed by the Mustangs 39-14 in London, Ont.
The Guelph Gryphons held firm at No. 10 after beating the Waterloo Warriors by a score of 42-25 in front of 8,500 fans at homecoming.
