The Windsor Lancers have reached the top five of the U Sports football rankings after beating the Ottawa Gee-Gees by a score of 21-18 this past weekend.
Danny Skelton hit Liam Talbot for a 25-yard touchdown on the second-last play of regulation to secure the win after Windsor’s defence crumbled late, allowing two Ottawa touchdowns in the final six minutes of the game. The Lancers drew a crowd of 5,241 fans for the matchup and sent them home happy following a sensational finish.
The victory improved Windsor’s record to 4-0 with wins over Queen’s, Carleton, York, and Ottawa. The Lancers won their first playoff game since 2011 last season and are looking to do so again amid an undefeated start to the campaign.
The top four spots of the rankings remained unchanged as the Laurier Golden Hawks, Montreal Carabins, Laval Rouge et Or, and Western Mustangs stayed firm. The Bishop’s Gaiters and Alberta Golden Bears moved up one spot each, while the Manitoba Bisons fell from No. 5 to No. 8 despite completing a comeback win over the Calgary Dinos.
The Alberta Golden Bears remained at No. 9 following a one-sided victory over the Regina Rams, while the Guelph Gryphons stayed at No. 10 despite losing to the Queen’s Gaels.
