Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ linebacker Adam Bighill will undergo season-ending knee surgery on Thursday, he revealed in a statement.
“Unfortunately today I’m going in for surgery on my knee that will end my season,” he posted to social media. “The support from family, friends, teammates, and fans has been incredible. It sure makes this process easier, as it’s the furthest thing from your expected version of the season. Excited to watch and help my guys finish this season to reach our ultimate goal.”
The five-foot-ten, 241-pound native of Montesano, Wa. made 48 defensive tackles and one sack over 10 starts this season. The injury occurred in the late stages of the Labour Day Classic in Regina, which Winnipeg won in a 35-33 nailbiter.
It doesn’t appear as though Bighill, who will turn 36 next month, has any plans to retire despite the surgery and ensuing rehabilitation.
“This isn’t the end of #4 by any means,” he wrote. “But it does mean one step at a time. Attacking rehab is next.”
The three-time Grey Cup champion, three-time CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player, six-time CFL all-star, and eight-time West Division all-star has recorded 939 defensive tackles, 71 special teams tackles, 50 sacks, 15 interceptions, 14 forced fumbles, and one touchdown over 190 career CFL games as a member of the B.C. Lions and Blue Bombers.
