The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks have taken the top spot in the U Sports football rankings for the first time in almost 30 years.
The team was ranked No. 4 nationally this past week when they beat the top-ranked Western Mustangs by a score of 43-28 in front of 2,943 fans at University Stadium. Taylor Elgersma was sensational for the Golden Hawks, completing 24-of-29 pass attempts for 385 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 22 yards and two scores.
Evan Hillock threw for 322 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception for the Mustangs, who were unable to overcome a 17-2 halftime deficit. The contest was a rematch of last year’s Yates Cup, which Western won by a score of 29-14.
Western fell from No. 1 to No. 4 in the rankings as a result of the loss, while the Montreal Carabins and Laval Rouge et Or remained at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
The Manitoba Bisons rose from No. 6 to No. 5 after defeating the Alberta Golden Bears in front of a homecoming crowd of 5,000 at Princess Auto Stadium. Veteran defensive back Nick Conway batted down a pass on an Alberta two-point conversion in the final minute of the game to secure a 24-23 win, improving their record to 3-0.
The Windsor Lancers fell from No. 5 to No. 6 after beating the York Lions, while the Bishop’s Gaiters, Queen’s Gaels, and Golden Bears remained at No. 7, No. 8, and No. 9, respectively. The Guelph Gryphons cracked the rankings at No. 10 for the first time this season after beating the McMaster Marauders, pushing the Regina Rams off the rankings.
