Saskatchewan Roughriders’ defensive tackle Miles Brown has been issued a maximum fine by the CFL for his low hit on Chris Streveler in the Banjo Bowl.
Under the terms of the league’s collective bargaining agreement, the maximum amount for a fine is equal to half a game cheque. According to salary information obtained by 3DownNation, the fine should cost Brown just over $2,500.
The hit in question occurred late in the third quarter and drew a penalty for roughing the passer. Brown immediately penetrated Winnipeg’s offensive line during the play and either lost his footing or was knocked over as he approached Streveler, who was dropping back for a surprise pass on second-and-two.
The dual-threat quarterback was incensed after the play and began screaming at Brown across the line of scrimmage while hopping on his uninjured right leg. Backup offensive lineman Micah Vanterpool was flagged for objectionable conduct after the play, presumably for yelling at Brown or his teammates.
Streveler has since been ruled out for the season after tearing three ligaments on the play. The hit, which came at or slightly above the knee, drew an outcry from fans but mixed reactions from players.
Winnipeg running back Brady Oliveira said postgame that he didn’t believe the hit was dirty, saying it was “probably hard (for Brown) to try and avoid” hitting Streveler. Veteran offensive lineman Patrick Neufeld, who has played against Brown many times since 2022, told 3DownNation that he’s not a dirty player.
However, this was the second time Brown has received supplemental discipline for an illegal hit on a Winnipeg quarterback after he knocked Zach Collaros out of the Labour Day Classic with a high hit.
Brown denied being a dirty player when speaking to the media ahead of the annual rivalry rematch, though he has now been the cause of three quarterback injuries this season, also taking out Ottawa’s Dru Brown with low contact in Week 10.
The CFL also levied two other fines, fining B.C. linebacker Ayinde Eley for a high hit on Montreal receiver Jose Barbon and Edmonton receiver Eugene Lewis for a crackback block on Calgary defensive back Branden Dozier. The amounts of the fines were not disclosed.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-7-1) will visit the Calgary Stampeders (4-8-1) on Friday, Sept. 20 with kickoff slated for 9:30 p.m. EDT.
