The Western Mustangs have taken the top spot in the U Sports football rankings after their 52-21 victory over the Carleton Ravens.
Western got off to a fast start, scoring two touchdowns in the first minute of the game. Roman Campanaro returned the opening kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown and Nash MacDonald fumbled the ensuing kickoff, giving the Mustangs possession deep in Carleton territory. The team needed only two plays to get back into the end zone as Keon Edwards ran the ball in from three yards out.
The Mustangs are off to a 3-0 start to the season after beating the Ottawa Gee-Gees, Waterloo Warriors, and Ravens by a combined score of 161-35.
The reigning Vanier Cup champion Montreal Carabins fell one spot to No. 2 following a 23-22 loss to their archrival Laval Rouge et Or, who remained at No. 3 despite the upset win. The Laurier Golden Hawks also stood firm at No. 4 after beating the Guelph Gryphons by a score of 33-24.
The Windsor Lancers climbed from No. 7 to No. 5 while on bye, while the Alberta Golden Bears fell from No. 5 to No. 9 after losing to Calgary and the Bishop’s Gaiters fell from No. 6 to No. 7 during their off week. The Manitoba Bisons rose from No. 9 to No. 6 following a 33-10 win over the UBC Thunderbirds, who fell off the rankings.
The Queen’s Gaels moved up from No. 10 to No. 8 with a 52-19 win over York, while the Regina Rams joined the rankings after upsetting their rival Saskatchewan Huskies 33-28.
