Saskatchewan Roughriders’ quarterback Trevor Harris believes his team can win the 111th Grey Cup despite being on a six-game winless streak.
“This team believes that we’re going to win games. I know that’s going to be a powerful thing as we finish this season but the talk has to stop — it needs to happen,” Harris said after the 59th Labour Day Classic.
The Riders started the season 5-1 but have not recorded a win since Friday, July 19 with five losses and a tie during that span. The Green and White have lost four games by one, two, three, and four points, respectively, with the other being an 11-point home loss to the Edmonton Elks.
The 38-year-old completed 30-of-49 passes (61 percent) for 368 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in an entertaining 35-33 defeat to the Blue Bombers at Mosaic Stadium on Sunday. Winnipeg started the season 0-4 but have bounced back to win six of their last eight games, including four in a row, to be first place in the West Division.
“Being as tight as it is in the West, we’ll be having a different conversation in a month,” head coach Corey Mace said. “I’m extremely proud of this damn team about how hard they play, we just gotta find a way. If you’ve seen anything about this team, we will play our *** off.”
Harris has faith Saskatchewan can produce winning results in the final third of the season. The Roughriders sit 5-6-1, placing third place in the West Division. The Banjo Bowl will decide the season series against the Blue Bombers, though it won’t matter unless one of the two teams records a tie before the end of the season.
“No more rah-rah speech — prove it. Go get results but do it through the process. We need to have some urgency every single day. I’ll make sure that we do,” Harris said. “We have the DNA of a championship team. I think we’re going to look back in a month-and-a-half and like where we’re at.”
The Riders travel to the Manitoba capital for the first regular season game featured on CTV in 2024. Kickoff goes at 3 p.m. ET at Princess Auto Stadium on Saturday, September 7.
