The Manitoba Bisons and Queen’s Gaels have joined the U Sports football rankings following big wins this past weekend.
The Bisons opened head coach Brian Dobie’s final season in style, knocking off the Saskatchewan Huskies by a score of 37-24 at Princess Auto Stadium. Jackson Tachinski threw two touchdown passes and Breydon Stubbs rushed for two more as the team beat their rivals to the west for the first time in five years.
Queen’s beat the McMaster Marauders by a score of 27-24 as Hec Crighton Trophy hopeful Jared Chisari carried the ball 27 times for 192 yards and three touchdowns. Justin Pace, a third-year linebacker from Montreal, helped seal the game for the Gaels as he forced a fumble from Nathan Denkers with 40 seconds remaining to secure the win.
This marks the first appearance for Manitoba and Queen’s on this year’s top 10 as the St. FX X-Men and Huskies fell out of the rankings.
The Montreal Carabins and Western Mustangs remained in the top two spots, while the UBC Thunderbirds fell from No. 3 to No. 8 after losing to the Alberta Golden Bears by a score of 42-28. Alberta rose from No. 7 to No. 4 with the win, while the Laval Rouge et Or and Laurier Golden Hawks both moved up one spot while on bye.
The Bishop’s Gaiters moved up from No. 10 to No. 6 after knocking off St. FX by a score of 37-27, handing the X-Men their first regular season loss since 2019. The Windsor Lancers fell from No. 6 to No. 7 after barely squeaking by the Carleton Ravens on a last-second field goal from Brady Lidster.
